Sharks Sports Handbook
EXTRA CURRICULAR SPORTS PHILOSOPHY
The purpose of the
After School Sports Program is to teach and exemplify the
basic human and Christian values of sportsmanship,
cooperation and teamwork. The goals are to help foster friendships,
provide leadership opportunities and help the students develop
a positive attitude toward sports and athletic competition.
The After School Sports Program is in a competitive league
that believes we play to win, but "not to win at all costs".
It is expected that every boy and girl be given the opportunity
to play each game during each season.
Uniform Policy
Students participating in the After School Sports Program
will be issued a uniform by the coach. A $25 deposit check
is submitted by each player to the Athletic Director or team
manager.
This deposit check will be returned when the complete uniform
is returned in proper condition to the coach immediately after
the conclusion of the specific sport season.
Player Eligibility Grades 5-6
Students begin playing on Junior Varsity teams in the 5th
or 5th grade and they play on the Varsity teams during the
7th and 8th grade. Junior Varsity teams will be grade specific,
the A teams are the 6th graders, the B teams are the 5th graders.
Varsity teams will
be on a try-out basis to determine the A & B teams. Try-outs
and team decisions will be made by the individual coaches
of that season. However, a Junior Varsity
player may be drafted by a Varsity team during the season to
fill a vacancy, if necessary. Once drafted to a Varsity team,
a player may not play again at the Junior Varsity level in
that sport. A Varsity player is not allowed to play down on
a JV team and no JV or Varsity player is allowed to switch
or rotate on other teams.
SHA After School Sports Rules and Expectations
THE AFTER SCHOOL ELIGIBILITY POLICY FOR STUDENTS IS FOUND
IN THE SHA HANDBOOK. PLEASE BE SURE YOU AND YOUR CHILD UNDERSTAND
THESE RULES AND EXPECTATIONS PRIOR TO SIGN UP.
SHA Policy reads:
1. If a student is absent from school, permission to play
in a game that day or if a student is absent from school on
Friday, permission to play on Saturday ar Sunday is granted
by the Athletic Director in consultation with the Principal.
2 If a student is in Saturday Detention, he/she may not play
in a game that day or on Sunday.
3. Academic standards: In order to play after school sports
at SHA a student must have a 2.0 GPA (C Average) on progress
report and semester report cards.
There are many students
grades 5 - 8 trying out for positions on our sports teams.
The following rules and regulations will
be strictly adhered to by the coaching staff and team members.
Failure to abide by these rules simply means less playing time
and/or the possibility of being removed from the team. We play
to win, but not win at all costs. The coaches are "in
charge" and will make decisions as to when and where to
play team members. This is a competitive league. We do not
guarantee "equal" playing time, but we do guarantee
if student meets all the criteria set forth by the coach, the
student will play in each game at least in each half of play.
1. PRACTICE AND GAMES MUST BE ATTENDED
Any team member who misses practice without a legitimate
excuse will not start in that week's game and will have considerably
less playing time. Any player who misses a game without a
legitimate excuse will not start in the following week's
game and will have considerably less playing time. Excuses
such as illness will always be accepted. If you have an appointment
or other obligation that prevents you from attending practice
or a game, please advise the coaches at least 24 hours in
advance. Detention or attending other sports functions is
not considered an excuse.
2. DON'T BE LATE
We have a limited amount of practice and time and will not
wait for anyone. Tardiness without an excuse means less playing
time. Detention is not an excuse! This rule applies to game
day. Team members are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior
to the start of the game.
3. PAY ATTENTION
After school sports are meant to be fun. yet they are also
very physical. Failure to listen to the coach's instructions
may result in the play missing assignments and the possibility
of injury. If we have discipline or attention problems with
a certain individual, it will be resolved through calisthenics.
If the problem persists, that individual will be asked to
leave the practice, or even removed from the team if the
situation warrants.
4. THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT
Any team member who misses a total of three practices or games
due to unexcused absences will be removed from the team.
Any team member who is asked to leave at any time during
practice due to a discipline problem will be given two chances
to correct his/her behavior. The third instance will result
in being removed from the team. There will be no exceptions.
These rules are meant for everyone in order to prevent injury
and invoke a sense of fairness and equality among team members.
The key to a successful season is the strict adherence to these
rules.
Please read and sign the Parent-Student Commitment Sheet,
Permission Slip and return them with your sports fee to your
Coach prior to, or on, the first day of practice.

Player Fees
Every year participating
schools in the diocese pay over one thousand dollars each
in league entry fees to help fund the
Diocesan sanctioned sports program. This money goes toward
field and facility use, scheduling labor and general administration
of the Diocesan program. In addition, there are officiating
fees paid for games between schools, sporting equipment purchases
and awards given to all participants. Consequently, to fund
this overall program, the PTG must ask each participating player
in a sport to pay a "player fee" or "entry fee".
Each player pays $35 to participate in After School Sports
at Sacred Heart Academy. Where does that money go? Following
is a breakdown:
Per student, per season of play:
$ 5.00 to League (Includes: forfeit fees, facility rental,
maintenance fees and League Director fee)
3.00 Supervisor's fee
15.00 Referee fees
5.00 Equipment (New Ball, etc.)
2.00 Uniform purchase (if necessary)
5.00 To underwrite some sports banquet expenses i.e. trophies)
