FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK...

By Principal Bob Hamm

"Living a better life" is a proper incentive. Creating a "better life" for your children is a good incentive. But the question is, what makes for a "better life"? What is a good starting point for creating this "better life"? You, as parents, must begin this "creating a better life" for your children in your home by creating a positive atmosphere in your home. We need to look at life as a trip. The quality of that trip depends more on the person making the trip than it does on the conditions or circumstances encountered along the way.

There are two kinds of people in this world - people with two different views of the world. The first group believes that what they do makes very little difference...that the forces around them are so powerful that they must leave the outcomes to fate or luck. The second group feel that what they do does make a difference, that no matter what surrounds them, that what they do does make a critical difference and that they can set their own destinies. These people believe that "if it is to be, it is up to me."

If you are a part of the second group, providing a positive atmosphere for your child will be much easier.

If life is a journey, then we obviously must make certain preparations if we expect to travel it successfully. All of us know that in our professional careers we must be prepared. But in the most important task of our lives - that of parenting - we assume that we need no particular preparation. We expect to marry, have babies, and somehow become instinctively skillful parents. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Effective parents are those who understand that preparation is the key to success. The most important qualities of a good parent have nothing to do with having a Ph.D. in child psychology or being able to provide your child with every state of the art toy. The qualities of a good parent are within reach of every caring individual.

One aspect of positive parenting most frequently overlooked is the importance of giving children a foundation in ethical and moral principles. It is the responsibility of parents to transmit these principles to their children. The Church and the school can only reinforce the ethical and moral principles you are teaching in your home.

Parents who wish to give their children a head start toward developing a strong moral code can observe these commonsense guidelines:

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Linda Small

I would like to thank all of the families that came out for the first of our family fun nights on Saturday, October 14. Bishop Brom, Father Ron and Monsignor Rhatigan's brother and his wife from Ireland were in attendance. We were very honored to have Bishop Brom there for the blessing and dedication of our new building.

The evening was fun from beginning to end. Irish dancers entertained the crowd and the DJ played songs that had kids and parents alike dancing the night away. The clown was kept busy making balloon treats for the kids as well.

On behalf of the entire school, I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to Steven and Janice Teixeira, chairs for the event, for all their hard work putting on this event. The tables and balloon arch were beautiful. It was a delightful evening.

Thank you also to the many, many people who worked so hard setting up, serving and cleaning up for the event: Lori Kretz, Mary Ann Capistrano, Stacy Turner, Patty DiMasi, Susie Merrill, Jim Kelly, Joe and Shelly Benoit, Tom Morley, Kevin and Colleen Morse and everyone else who helped. Thank you also to John Small for donating the wine and to Father Ron for the use of parish tables and chairs. An event like this is successful because of great people like you.

Until next time…

SACRED HEART ACADEMY P.T.G. BUDGET FOR 2000-2001

Susie Merrill

As PTG executive board Treasurer, my job is to keep you informed of the PTG financials and where PTG funds are being spent. I will be reporting to you through the HEARTBEAT on a regular basis. Hopefully by keeping communications open, each family will see the need to be a visible, volunteer within the structure of the PTG.

For the 2000-2001 school year, the P.T.G. projected gross income is $75,000.00. $65,000 of this total is being raised to meet the expenses that are required to subsidize the school budget. The financial obligation of the school is met only on tuition and PTG funds raised by the families of SHA.

$40,000 of the $65,000 is raised through the $200 per family assessment fee. The Big Event is projected to raise an additional $26,000. All other monies raised will go through the PTG account.

Following is a listing of PTG expenses as of October 20,2000

1. The PTG has given each teacher a check for $200.00 to purchase classroom items that are not covered in the curriculum fee. This way each teacher can purchase some special item for their classroom Cost: $2200.00

2. The PTG hosted a luncheon for Monsignor Rhatigan 's funeral Mass at the request of Father Ron. This was obviously not a budgeted item and cost the PTG $500.00. Father Ron gave us $250.00 since this was also a Parish obligation. We were more than happy to do this for Monsignor since he did so much for SHA.

3. The directory was put together once again by PTG members Charlene and Ken Ables. The cost to print the directory was off set by underwriting. Cost: $375.00

4. Hospitality and Orientation were paid for by the PTG. Cost: $60.00

As the school year progresses, I will inform you of each expense and how it will enrich and educate your children, adding to the excellence of Sacred Heart Academy. Thank you for your continuing support of our school and our children.

SHA LIBRARY

SHA LIBRARY ACTIVITIES

I have been going in the classrooms giving book talks and reading stories to our students. Everybody enjoys a good Halloween story. We are starting on study and library skills and junior high is doing research at the local public library. Some classes have made visits to the OB Library to check out books. If you would like an application for a student public library card just send a note to me or pick up one at your local public library. The library card is good throughout the Serra Library system and you may checkout and return books at different libraries. Each class will go to the O.B. library a couple of times during the year, usually on a Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon. Books may be returned to the library by the due date or to SHA by the Tuesday on or before the due date. Students are not allowed to check out books for others or to check out videos.

During the month of November, Paul White's after school art class will be displaying some of their art work from last year. Drop by and see the creations of our budding artists.

THANK YOU

It's not too late to thank all the members of the PTG for the $200 given to the library at the beginning of the year. It's great to have parents who are so supportive. It is so wonderful when I have funds to buy those library extras that come along during the year.

Thank you to all the families who saved aluminum cans and 2 ltr. bottles over the summer through the end of September. The drive raised $123 and a generous donation from the Andrade family brought the total to $143. Thank you Brendon, Leslie and Allyson. The 3rd grade was the winner of the can drive, with 7th in a close 2nd place. Both classes and the top individual recyclers received an ice cream treat. All of the others who helped were given a Halloween treat. Our fall drive will run until we return from Christmas vacation. Please keep bringing in cans and plastic bottles to recycle.

Dr. Mary O'Connor, dentist of Celestina, Adina and Carmen Kuncz, donated to the library the book, Open Wide &endash; Tooth School Inside. What a fun way to learn about your teeth and the work of dentists. Thank you Dr. O'Connor.

USED BOOK SALE

Please save good used books at home. We'll be having a used book sale when the library opens for regular use. I'll let you know when to send them in and thanks for being so patient.

HOMEWORK LAB

Teachers will let you know in their Tuesday letters when homework lab will start up. The lab is a quiet study time where students may get help with homework from me or parent helpers. Students must be in the library by 3:00 and stay until 3:30. If homework takes less time students must read or work silently. Any student who can follow these rules is welcome to come. The library remains open until 4 most days and students may read or study quietly. Students who cannot follow the rules will be asked to leave with a note to their parents. Students are never allowed in the halls after school unless they have adult supervision.

S TAND UP FOR KIDS

Bob Hamm

Thank you to all the students and their families who continue to regularly support our efforts on behalf of Stand Up For Kids each week. Please remember that every Wednesday is Stand Up For Kids collection day. Please check the item list in last month's Heartbeat for items to send. If you have misplaced your Heartbeat, it is always online on our website at www.s-h-a.org.

Another way we support Stand Up For Kids is through monthly collections at our all-school masses. At the September all-school mass, we collected $145.00. Thanks to everyone who made a contribution.

Each one of you who participate in this program really do make a difference in the lives of the children on the streets of our community. Often times, we ignore the children on the street and choose to pretend that they are not there. Here is a note from one of these children:

I saw you walk by again today. You know me! I am the one sitting in the back of the alley. I can tell, you just seem to walk a little faster as you pass me by. You're probably thinking to yourself, why doesn't that kid go home!? Well, I want to. I really do! But, it won't happen. You see, my mom was an IV drug user, but she is dead now…AIDS. And now my dad has a girlfriend and she doesn't want me around.

Right now I know I look a mess. But, here in the alley, no one cares! I thought maybe dad would come looking for me, but he hasn't. I remember all the times he said I was his little girl. I'll be 14 next week, I want to go home. I really do!!

I wanted to stop you and talk today. I wanted to ask you to just say something nice to me. Show me that I matter, let me know that someone cares. I miss my mom. Even if we didn't have a real relationship, she was my mom. Not just that biological thing that most of the kids say. I remember when I was little. She used to watch cartoons with me. I loved her laugh. I can almost hear it still. When you come by tomorrow and I wave back? Acknowledge me. I just hurt so bad right now. I need someone to show me, tell me that all of this is going to change, that it's going to get better.

It is, isn't it? I want to go home. I really do!

HOT LUNCH UPDATE

Linda Small

This school year, we are using a new hot lunch vendor, Upper Crust Pizza. We feel that this supplier offers a better program for our school due to the variety in menu choices and portion sizes for each day as well as the fact that all of the food is prepackaged, thereby eliminating food handling and portion concerns. While most of the feedback has been very positive so far, we have heard some concerns regarding some of the menu items and food temperature complaints. Please be advised that we are working hard to correct these problems. Some changes have already been made to eliminate unpopular food items and add new ones to the list. Please look for new items in upcoming order forms. Also, Upper Crust will build a "Snack Shack" with heating and refrigeration abilities for better quality control once the building is complete. As you know, we are working under rather temporary conditions while under construction and expect that you will see great improvement once the building is complete. Please be patient but continue to communicate with us regarding your preferences and concerns. We welcome your comments regarding this and other matters.

THE BIG EVENT

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO…..

Van Thaxton

The Big Event 2000-2001 Committee is "reeling" in some star-studded surprises for the Big Night. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and make this year's Big Event the best ever!

BEST LEADING ACTOR AND ACTRESS and BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR AND ACTRESS. This is a raffle drawing with a fun twist. Of course, the more tickets you purchase, the greater your chance of winning. One week before the Big Event, a random drawing will be held to reveal two winning tickets. The prize in this category is a ride to the Big Event in a luxury limousine, enjoy hors d'ouvres and champagne and other special star-treatment. Watch for advance ticket sales and details.

BEST PRODUCER. This too is a raffle drawing and winners will be awarded CASH prizes in a 50/50 drawing. 50% of all money taken from raffle sales will go to the school and 50% will be split between five winners. Watch for advance ticket sales and details.

BEST ARTISTIC DIRECTION. The SHA class that creates the winning design for the 50th Anniversary Big Event T-shirt will be treated to a pizza party. The winner will be announced the night of the Big Event. Everyone who attends the Big Event will receive a complimentary T-shirt as well as the students in the winning class. Stay tuned for details on design criteria and deadlines.

PARKING ETIQUETTE

Bob Hamm

Parking etiquette??? What a novel idea!

As all of you know, parking around our school is at a premium. Because of this we should all be extra thoughtful of everyone. In the mornings too many parents are using the green curb area in front of the school as a long-term parking lot. Remember that that area is for maximum fifteen-minute parking only. If you need to be in the school longer, please find another place to park, leaving that area open for parents, especially parents of younger students, who need to drop off their children.

In the afternoons, chaos reigns supreme in front of the school! Please put forth a little extra effort and exercise a little extra patience and thoughtfulness, and 2:45-3:00 will be a much calmer time for all of us.

I thank all of you in advance for practicing PARKING ETIQUETTE!!!

EARNING FOR LEARNING PROGRAM

EASY AS 1-2-3

Earning for learning is as easy as 1-2-3.

1)Shop at Horton Plaza.

2) Turn in your receipts into the school office.

3) SHA earns credit for every dollar you spend.

At the end the school year SHA will receive a gift certificate to purchase books, equipment and supplies for the school. The more receipts you turn in, the more the school will earn. See, it's as easy as 1-2-3. Look for more information in your Tuesday folder. Thank you for your help.

SPORTS TEAM MANAGERS NEEDED

SHARK SPORTS REPORT

GIRLS ATHLETICS

Gary and Beth Lee

Another volleyball season is underway. Thanks go out to all the parents and coaches who helped organize the teams on such short notice:Varsity'A': Gary Lee and Karyn Dousette, Varsity 'B': Jeff Davidson and Jim Kelly, J.V. 'A': Darlene Drewlow and Bev Johnson, J.V. 'B': Barbara Austin. A special thank you goes to Rosalie Covey for making sure all the girls and parents got their schedules and other printed materials. The Varsity team is undefeated with a 6-0 record. Good luck with the rest of the season and the playoffs.

FOOTBALL SEASON OPENER

Dwight Harrington

The Sacred Heart Varsity football team, The Sharks, met their match on Saturday September 30, 2000, during the first game of the new season with a 27 to 7 loss to All Hollows of La Jolla at OLPH in Lakeside. The first defensive stand for the Sharks resulted in a touchdown for All Hollows, with a missed extra point. Although everyone gave it their all, The Sharks were outmatched by their opponents for most of the first half. The Sharks just couldn't get their offense moving and ended up giving the ball away after several missed fourth down conversions.

By the second half however, the Sharks had regained their composure and were able to hold All Hollows to no additional points. The Shark offense also got on track with several productive drives which netted 7 points. But with all of the team's effort, it was too much of a deficit to make up. The Sharks showed a lot of determination and perseverance and will no doubt have a great season! Come out and support the team as The Sharks make a run for the black and gold.

***

HOLY TRINITY (GAME TWO)

Dwight Harrington

Game two of the season took place at Holy Trinity and all of the Sacred Heart Shark's came to play. The momentum that began in the second half of game one carried through throughout the entire game as the Shark's downed the home team, Holy Trinity Hawks, 13 to 6. "This was a complete team effort", says Coach Jim Author.

The Shark's settled in as these two well-balanced teams went at it. For the Shark's, both the offensive and defensive teams put on constant pressure against the Hawks. One bright spot came when Se Chung ran an outside sweep for the first touchdown of the year. Both teammates, as well as fans cheered as Se flew past. This reporter heard one fan say, "Wow! Who was that man? Man is he fast!" The extra point conversion was made by Ross Harrington to bring the score to 7. The Hawks, after many exchanges, were finally able to mount a drive that resulted in a touchdown. But again, with extreme defensive pressure by the Shark's, the Hawks were unable to make their extra point.

Defensive pressure continued into the second half with an interception by Brian Kenny. Which soon resulted in a touchdown by Dominic Sanfilippo. The entire team put on a great performance and showed signs of some very exciting things to come!

See you at the game, and keep your eyes out for that Se Sweep.

MONSIGNOR RHATIGAN'S DINNER

Susie Merrill

The new building dedication and dinner honoring Monsignor Rhatigan on Saturday October 14, 2000 was a huge success both socially and financially. We came within $100.00 of the funds collected from ticket sales. The amount collected from ticket sales ($10.00 per adult and $6.00 per child), was spent as follows: The DJ, "Party Sounds," ($350.00), the beautiful archway of balloons, ($133), the liquor license for the evening, ($15), the Celtic Dancers ($100), the clown with balloons and gifts for the children ($100), and the cost of the dinner from Upper Crust. We were able to save over $500 because Father Ron loaned parish chairs and tables and $ 645 because John and Linda Small donated the wine.

HALLOWEEN CANDY

Bob Hamm

Once again, as in past years, we are asking our students to share their Halloween treats with Tijuana's poorest of the poor. We ask you to send in "extra" Halloween candy to school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - November 1,2, and 3.

This candy will be put into plastic bags of 8 ounces each and given to the children in Tijuana for Christmas. In previous years, this project enabled us to give more than 7,000 8 oz. bags of candy for gifts.

Please make a special effort to participate in this project.

MR. HAMM GETS "INK"

Alert parent, Tina Atchley saw an article in The Southern Cross titled Even Principals Are Learners. The article focused on mentor principals who help new principals grow in their positions. Not only was our very own Mr. Hamm pictured and mentioned, but he was quoted as well. Following is an excerpt from that excellent article:

Bob Hamm of Sacred Heart School, Ocean Beach says, "I'm glad to be a part, honored to be a part, of the mentor program." He says it gives him and Daniel Worley, new principal at St. Columba School, a chance to "have an ongoing relationship, to cry on each others' shoulders or enjoy great things together. It makes things easier to know you have someone you can get together with on a regular basis," he says. Hamm, who has 21 years experience as a principal and Worley have set aside time to talk once a week.

Congratulations, Mr. Hamm on a job well done!

MEET YOUR PTG OFFICER/DIRECTOR

MEET YOUR PTG REPRESENTATIVE

Van Thaxton

SUSIE MERRILL

First up is our PTG Treasurer, Susie Merrill. Susie is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the PTG funds and overseeing income and expenditures of the PTG. Just try to get her to let go of some of that money and you will see that she is well suited for her job. In addition to being a two-time Treasurer, Mrs. Merrill has served as the Ways and Means Director, the Big Event Chair in 1997, and the President of the Principal's Advisory Board in 1999. She also volunteers in various capacities at SHA as well as helps with Senior Lunch at the Parish and is active at the USA Freestyle Karate banquet and fundraiser.

The Merrills have been involved members of the SHA family for six years with their two children, Matthew (5th grade) and Samantha (4th grade). What Susie likes best about SHA are the school's sense of community, its educational standards and the core knowledge curriculum.

In her "previous life," Mrs. Merrill was the manager and controller at Alamo Car Rental for 20 years overseeing more than 150 employees. There she gained her skills in accounting that enabled her to be an invaluable asset here at SHA.

Susie Merrill has been married to James Merrill, owner of Affordable Roofing, Inc., for 17 years. They met, she says, "when the boys were playing poker." It looks like Jamie was the winner that day! The Merrills have a Golden Retriever named Roxy and a cat named Simon. Three years ago, the family was adopted by a stray cat named Monsty. Since the Merrils proved to be a loving family, they were very fortunately allowed to stay. She considers her greatest accomplishment to be her marriage of 17 years to a "great man" and her two children, whom she says, are "really great."

When asked what she likes to do for fun, Susie said very simply, "Party! Just invite us!" She also loves to go to Hawaii, her favorite travel destination. Her favorite book is The Stand by Steven King and her favorite movie is Gone With the Wind. Without question, she favors Mexican food, especially with cold cervesas. Her ideal day would be to dine out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, "So I don't have to cook at all!"

Susie says that what few people know about her is that she is an open book. "I don't hold grudges, I have no secrets. Just ask me." Like her favorite heroine, Scarlet O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, Susie subscribes to the philosophy "Tomorrow is another day.

STACY TURNER

Stacy Turner, this year's PTG vice president, hails from the big state of Texas. As vice president, she assists the president with official PTG matters and steps in when the president cannot be in attendance. In addition to her post as vice president, Stacy has twice chaired and co-chaired the Big Event (and last year had a baby in the middle of it all) and she is active in the classroom as well. Her other current occupation is that of a taxi cab driver for children Laurel, a junior in high school, Justine, an 8th grader, Sam, a 1st grader and Reese, just 10 months old.

Stacy has been married to John Turner, an attorney from Tucson, for eight years. They met when they worked together at the same law firm. In addition to their children, the Turners are the loving masters of three dogs: Lucy, a scarf-wearing shepherd and Thurston and Lovey, two small bow-wearing _________. The entire Turner family has been active in SHA activities for 7 years. What they like most about Sacred Heart are the great friends they have made and being around so many dedicated parents.

When asked what she liked to do for fun, Stacy was quick to respond, "That's none of your business" but covered by going on to say, "well, just say I like to play basketball, shop and have lunch with my friends."

Stacy's favorite book is The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and her favorite movie is An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. Her favorite food is Gorgonzola pudding. Well, that's not exactly true. But she did say that she loved anything with Gorgonzola cheese. Her greatest accomplishments are raising her darling children.

When asked what few people know about her she said, "If I told you, then it wouldn't be a little know fact, now would it, Van?" Then she went on to say, "Nobody knows that I'm really shy."

***

PATTY DIMASI

This year's PTG Secretary is Patty DiMasi. Patty's job has her taking copious notes of the PTG meetings and preparing minutes and agendas for the board members. She fulfills this job with the utmost professionalism and accuracy. This is Patty's first time on the PTG Executive Committee. Last year, Patty co-chaired the Academy's Big Event, which was a record-breaker in terms of revenues. For the last two years, Patty has served as the Scrip Coordinator, transitioning us from paper scrip, in many cases, to electronic scrip. In addition to the many volunteer functions she performs at SHA, Patty is also on the Children's Hospital Auxiliary, sings soprano in the Sacred Heart Parish traditional choir and has coordinated SHA families to participate in the Susan Kromen Breast Cancer Run for the Cure. Before retiring to become a full-time homemaker, Mrs. DiMasi was an administrative manager for an investment advisor for many years.

Patty is married to Tim "once a Marine, always a Marine" DiMasi, owner of Air Freight Forwarding Company in San Diego. They met while watching a 49er's/Cowboy's playoff game in a restaurant/bar in Mill Valley, California. Soon, they will celebrate 18 years of marriage. Patty and Tim have three children and possibly the finest grandson ever born. Michelle is 30 and a nurse in Chicago, Karen is 24, married and mother to Ryan, 3 months old and Timmy Jr. is 9 and in the 3rd grade at SHA. Timmy has been at SHA since he was in kindergarten.

The DiMasi's enjoy entertaining friends in their home and Patty is an especially good cook. She enjoys reading and singing and spending time with her children and grandson. Her favorite book is All My Love Gracie by George Burns and anything by Leon Uris. Her favorite meal includes a rare filet from Ruth's Chris and she is yet to find her favorite travel location. Her greatest accomplishments so far are her children and surviving cancer two times and being cancer-free for over five years!

I asked her, what do few people know about you? She answered, "That I have been known to fly 6,000 miles on a 3 day weekend and endure hours of extreme heat, just to watch a NASCAR race." Now we know!

KATHY HAILEY

Kathy is not only serving her term as immediate past president of the PTG this year, but she is also serving her last year as a Sacred Heart parent. Kathy Hailey, who has been an active SHA parent for 12 years, is the mother of Jackie, a senior at OLP, Jesse, a freshman at Saint's and Paige, an 8th grader at SHA. During those 12 years at SHA, Kathy served as Ways and Means Director, Hot Lunch Director, Grandparent's Day Director, Secretary, Vice President, and of course, President. Whew! In addition to all of that, she is active in MADCAPS, a volunteer organization, with her daughters. Kathy has not worked (for compensation) since the birth of her youngest child, Paige. What she likes most about SHA is the fact that parents can be involved and make a direct difference in their children's education.

Kathy has been married to Rob Hailey, owner of a commercial floor covering business, for 18 years. They met when he went through her "check-out" line at Von's grocery store in Pacific Beach. (The editor will reserve the obvious quip at this point.) In addition to their three children, the Haileys are the proud parents of a very active 3 year-old black Labrador named Roxy.

When she is not volunteering at school or elsewhere, Kathy enjoys playing tennis, walking and traveling, especially to Mexico. Her favorite food is also of the Mexican persuasion. Perhaps you did not know that Kathy spent 3 semesters in Mexico City attending college. She and her oldest daughter spend two weeks every summer in Mexico taking intensive Spanish classes. "I am looking forward to taking Jesse and Paige this coming summer."

When asked about her greatest accomplishments, she says by far, of course, they are her three wonderful children.

A PARENT WRITES…

Carol Blackford

Summer is always fun, but this summer was exceptionally rewarding for Cheyenne Blackford, a second grader in Mrs. Massa's class. In June, Cheyenne spent a week at Camp Sea World learning about a variety of sea creatures. Then, she spent three weeks at Gateways in La Jolla studying physics, cartooning and drama. Drama was her favorite, and she had the lead part in the class musical, The Little Red Hen.

In July, Cheyenne concentrated on improving her swimming skills with lessons at the Plunge and trips to the beach with her Daddy. She also enjoyed a camping trip with her Mom and Dad that included a three-mile hike up the mountain and three miles back down. The hike was pretty strenuous.

In August, Cheyenne's Auntie Donna came from Virginia for a visit. Cheyenne spent another week at Camp Sea World, this time studying "From Snails to Whales." She also spent two weeks in Balboa Park: one at the Museum of Man where she created magical masks and another at the Museum of Natural History studying dinosaurs and making a diorama of the prehistoric world.

Summer ended with Cheyenne's initiation ceremony into the Brownies. It gave her the opportunity to display the badges she had earned. It was a great summer vacation, but it was fun to return to Sacred Heart and see all her friends and her new teacher

BOX TOPS 4 EDUCATION

Van Thaxton

Guess what I found in my kitchen pantry today? I found seventy-five cents. Not impressed? Well, if each family in our school found this in their cabinets each month, our school could benefit greatly. How, you ask? On the top of many General Mills food boxes is a pink or green tab, worth $ .15 and $ .10, respectively. It is this simple: clip the box tops, write your child's name and grade on the back, save the box tops in a zip lock bag, and turn them in to the office at the end of each month. Each month, we will report on the class that brings in the greatest value of box tops. The winning class gets a free dress day in the next school month. The winning class for the year gets an ice cream party.

Congratulations to the second grade class for bringing in the most box tops in September. They turned in a total of 150 box tops equaling $15.15. Way to go 2nd grade!

I can't begin to tell you how you children brightened up my day with all the wonderful cards you made. What creativeness and sense of caring all of you displayed. I especially liked your references to the Packers, even though they didn't win today. I'll always be a Packer fan.

I thought I would tell you that while I was in the hospital, I went to confession. Not that I had a whole lot to confess, but it allowed me to get a little closer to my God. Isn't it great that we have him there to help us in our time of need? The priest that heard my confession was a young priest but very nice and understanding of an older person's needs and desires.

I missed out of so many happy hours with Mrs. Brinker when she was your age. Her daddy was in the Air Force and they were stationed in Japan and then Germany. So I missed out on all of those wonderful years while she was growing up.

I hope all of you make up your mind that you'll turn out to be the kind of person Mrs. Brinker is when you grow up. There's a special place in my heart for her. I hope all of you do well in school and continue to be the great students Mrs. Brinker tells me you are.

Thanks again and may God bless you all.
