Next week you will receive your re-registration packet for the school year 2001-2002. As part of your re-registration process, I ask you to contemplate the following: Before you reregister for the next school year, please make sure that you understand what is expected of you and your child at Sacred Heart Academy. In order for your child to be successful, you are expected to be a team member who understands the purposes and goals of the team. At Sacred Heart Academy you should expect: 1. A Catholic faith-centered atmosphere where the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church are central to everything at school. 2. A rigorous, challenging academic program which expects your child to achieve. 3. Dedicated professional educators who follow the Core Knowledge Curriculum explicitly, teaching it in the style that they deem most appropriate for the students. 4. Homework, which reinforces class work most every night, and math homework most every weekend. 5. To be an active participant in the life of the school through your volunteer efforts both in and out of the classroom. 6. To be supportive of all school policies, but know that your input is valued. 7. To let the professional educators teach your child as he/she deems best. They are the professionals who know what is best for their students. 8. To make sure that your child knows that you value and support the educational and spiritual programs at Sacred Heart Academy. If this is the team you want to be on, we welcome you as a returning team member and value the gifts that you bring to our team. May God continue to bless you and your family. OOPS I DID IT AGAIN Bob Hamm Last month in my column, I thanked those special people who helped make our building project a success. Of course, I omitted someone who was very helpful as well: Charlene and Ken Ables. They provided the vertical blinds in my new office and at the same time, replaced the vertical blinds in Carol Luz's office and in Ferol Henkel's office. We owe them a very special thank you! Both Ken and Charlene are always actively involved in the life of both Sacred Heart Academy and Sacred Heart Parish. We are indeed fortunate that they are a vital part of the Sacred Heart family! |

You may have noticed that the area at the entrance to the Rhatigan wing has been landscaped. This garden area is a gift to the school from Bob and Mary Hamm. Both of Mary's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Champine, recently died and this garden area is a memorial to both of them. |

Family Fun
Night Janice Teixeira Eggs, eggs, eggs. Don't we love those confetti eggs? Please continue to save your eggshells. We will be using them for a family fun night in May. Look for further updates in future Tuesday folders. In the meantime, how about an omelet, some quiche, or a hearty egg dish? Let's get scrambling! |

SHA LIBRARY

A Huge Success!
Thank you to all who have participated in the most successful book fair we've had yet at SHA. It was a huge success with many books going into the hands of students, bonus books being given to classrooms and a cash profit of $1000 going into the library fund. Also, many books were purchased for the classrooms as wish lists were fulfilled. Thank you to the following people for donating books to the library:
Isaac and Marta Finkelstein
Lori Kretz
Ryan Ganem
Michael Turnackas
Erin Capistrano
Ryan Sousa
My special thanks goes to the 24 members of the book fair team who volunteered their time. I couldn't have done it without you!
Used Book Sale
We are finally going to have a used book sale. If you have any books at home you want to donate, it's not too late. Just send them to the library. Books will be priced from 10 cents to one dollar. The sale will be held the week of March 5th.
Just Wild about Harry
We are having some special contests for those students who are reading or who have read the Harry Potter series. Pick up questions to answer, a word search, or a poster form in the library. Some Harry Potter prizes may magically appear if you're a winner!
Recycling
I have $100 to spend from the Recycling Program when I attend the new book workshop in May. Our recycling Mom has asked that you empty all cans and no glass, please. Make sure to attach a label with your child's name, grade, and number of recyclable items if you want them to count for the contest, which continues until Easter vacation. Bags with glass will not count. Thank you for participating.
Birthday Book Club Party
There will be a birthday book club party on March 2nd for all students who donated to the Birthday Book Club during the months of September to February. Another party will be held at the end of the year for those who donate during the second semester.
Thank you, Third Grade!
Thank you to Mrs. Colvin and the third grade for their wonderful Roman times projects that have been on display in the library during the past month.

Jay A. Davis It was one very dark night when we drove into the town of Union City, NJ. I watched as my father took Diane from the car and walked her over to the nuns. From the car window, I watched with much sadness as Diane started crying and pleaded not to be left there at the orphanage. I could only sit in the car to watch and wonder. Dad spoke to the nuns briefly and then headed back to the car. I suddenly had a strange feeling come over me that this was going to be my fate also. After we left the girls' orphanage, I tried to make it seem as though I was asleep. See, I felt that adults were reluctant to disturb a child who was sleeping. I must have heard them mention that so many times before. It wasn't going to hold true in this case though, as I was soon about to find out. Next stop, Jersey City, NJ! My dad plucked me from the car and handed me over to those awaiting our arrival. "We'll take him up to the dormitory," one nun stated. I don't recall any good-byes or any explanations as to why I was being left at this place. Nothing at all was said to me. In that nighttime sky, the orphanage looked more like a great big haunted castle rather then the sanctuary of God it was, and boy was I scared. In the months preceding the orphanage, I do remember some loud arguing and some mean looking faces around the supper table at our home. I also remember some statements that included the words, "those kids" within their sentences. But I could have never imagined it would have lead to our present situation. I couldn't understand why our parents were getting rid of us. The next few years of my life in Saint Bonaventure was lived mostly in a fog. I spent a lot of my time wondering "Why," "How come," "What did I do wrong," and most of all, "Why was I being returned to God?" I had no idea what was going on in my life, I only had questions unanswered. I thought of the orphanage as a form of God's home because it had a church within its walls and we learned all about God. I must have learned early on about God prior to the orphanage, because I knew He was our creator. Day after day I would sit and watch the airplanes fly in and out of nearby Newark Airport. It was actually the first time I remember seeing an airplane. I would watch those planes for hours on end as I sat in the courtyard during playtime. I used to wonder if that was how God got the people back and forth from heaven and earth and vice versa. I wondered when it was going to be my turn. I thought I must have done something terribly wrong to warrant my return to him. During my time in the orphanage, I don't remember being talked to about my situation. I was left to conclude mostly on my own. Being young was my burden and the grown-ups around me didn't think I would understand any of their explanations anyway. Saturday upon Saturday went by as I went to the confessionals and tried to redeem myself. I knew there was something I had done wrong&emdash;and if only I could remember. If only I could remember what wrong I had committed, I could then confess it to the priest and God would set me free. Free to go back home to the family I loved and missed so much. I know on those Saturdays I must have claimed doing at least once, everything from A through Z. But I was getting no results. I was trying very hard to solve my dilemma. In the confessional I knew if I could confess "The Sin", I'd be allowed to leave. I spent many lost years living in the past trying to understand the "why" of my childhood. Years I should have spent living life in the present. When I entered the orphanage, I was not yet 3 years old. Each one of us has the ability to touch another life positively. I believe that children see and hear with great clarity although they may not, at their present stage of development, be able to show us that they understand. In time though, they will eventually begin to make sense of all your words. It's important that you talk to your children and that your children talk to you. |

Adult Resignation
I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an eight-year-old again. I want to go to McDonald's and think that it is a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make ripples with rocks. I want to think that M&M's are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer day. I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all things that should make you worried or upset. I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again. I want to live simple again. I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness and loss of loved ones. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peach, dreams, the imagination, mankind and making angels in the snow. So, here's my checkbook and my car keys, my credit card bills and my 401k statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first, 'cause, tag you're it!

Sports
Soccer Season Gary and Beth Lee Soccer season is in full swing. The SHA Varsity team got off to a slow start, tying their first game and losing their second. Since that time they have positioned themselves for the playoffs by beating St. Charles 4&endash;0 with one goal scored by Jennifer Howard, one by Kelly Wilks, and two goals by Molly O'Toole. They then beat St. Columba with a score of 3&endash;2 with one goal scored by Paige Hailey and two goals scored by Kelly Wilks. They are currently in third place in Varsity Division II and gaining momentum as they move toward making the playoffs. Their final two games were against St. Martin on February 17th and against the School of the Madeleine on February 24th. Look for the latest results in the next Heartbeat. The Junior Varsity team got off to a slow start and is still looking for a first win. However, they are showing improvement as a team. As their individual skills improve, so will their record. Go, Sharks! |

On March 23rd we can all join together at the Big Event to raise a toast to the legacy of Sacred Heart Academy and to the future which is to come! This is a family reunion for present and past SHA families and a time for all of us to party together! It is a time for fun! It is a time for celebrating together and a time for giving. This is our only fundraiser Wouldn't it be great if every SHA family is a part of this celebration? Let's encourage each other to be there, to be a part of the celebration! So, when the invitation comes say "yes" and come and party with us! See you there! |

Van Thaxton This month's PTG profile is someone who is no stranger to SHA. She has three children at our school and has served many functions on the PTG board and in the classroom including Parliamentarian, Secretary, and Room Parent Coordinator. She has assisted with the hot lunch program and has even sewn those cute little bonnets we have available for new Sacred Heart babies. This year, and for several years now, she has been the P.E. Uniform Coordinator with Janice Teixeira. Can you guess who that is? It's Lori Kretz. Lori is originally from Los Angeles but has lived in San Diego for the past fifteen years. She attended Marlborough school then matriculated at Loyola Marymount University and USC. Before settling in to her full-time occupation as wife, mother and volunteer, Lori worked as a dental hygienist for 12 years.

Barbara Finkelstein I want to thank everybody who has been bringing in cans and bottles for recycling. Your efforts really help the library. I would like to remind everybody that we can only accept aluminum cans and plastic bottles. We can't, for obvious safety reasons, have glass bottles being recycled on the playground. Also, please empty your cans and bottles before bringing them in, otherwise it's very messy. Thanks again for all your good work!

We will want Spring Sports, too. So, get snappin'! Thank you. |
LENTEN RENEWAL Fr. Ron Lent is a time of personal renewal. During these forty days, we are asked to search our hearts, to see where we need to grow and change. Our parish has planned activities throughout Lent, which will facilitate our personal renewal during this season. Please take a few minutes to go through the Lenten Planner in your Tuesday folder today and mark your calendar with dates of special Lenten events in our parish. By actively being involved in the parish renewal events offered, the goodness which shone through the person of Jesus can more brightly shine in your life, also.
