FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S
DESK... Despite the presence of movies, television, and radio in our lives, reading is still basic as a necessary skill and a means of enriching life. The ability to read, understand, and interpret the written word is the key to independence in daily living. This key also opens up the whole world of experiences, ideas, and beauty. You as parent can create an atmosphere in which your child will see reading as an important and rewarding skill. Your attitude toward reading is contagious. Are newspapers, magazines, and books important to you? Does your child see you reading for pleasure as well as for information? Is Bible reading a family experience? Do you write notes to your child, perhaps to inform, perhaps to give messages of love and confidence? Reading stimulates intellectual growth and develops the imagination. It can cure loneliness and boredom. Reading can be a way of exploring other places and other times. It enables us to share in the lives of great people of the past and to understand problems faced by others today. Start now. By example and action, add love of reading to the gifts that you offer your child. |

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER Stacy Turner, PTG President For those of you who have not noticed, the wall around the play area has been completed and looks great. Many thanks to Randy Dietz for an exceptional job, and to those who so generously donated money so that we could complete this project. If you have not already taken a look, please stop by and do so. I would like to remind everyone of the upcoming Lion's Club Spaghetti Dinner on February 2, 2002. Sacred Heart greatly benefits from this event in the way of funds given to our tuition assistance program. Please try to attend, or if you are unable, please consider a donation to the Peninsula Lions for this event. Also mark your calendars for The Big Event 2002. In the next few weeks you will begin receiving information regarding donations, etc. Remember that this is our only FUNdraiser. This year's event is shaping up nicely, and should prove to be the fun time it has always been. Thanks to all who so generously give of your time and resources to make our school such a wonderful place.

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE Ferol Henkels 1. Field trip drivers, please remember to return all paperwork (emergency cards, etc.) to the teacher immediately following the field trip. The emergency cards are used throughout the school year for subsequent field trips. 2. The federal taxpayer identification number for Sacred Heart Academy Extended Daycare is 95-1644613. Please write it down. 3. Each month, attached to the Heartbeat is a school calendar. Please post this calendar in a visible spot. The calendar represents the most current information on free dress days, holidays, half days, school Masses, etc. Check the calendar each day for information you may need. This will be the most up-to-date calendar. The calendar posted in the directory may change. The calendar is also on our website at www.s-h-a.org. 4. For each contributing parishioner, don't forget to meet your goal of contributing $350 to Sacred Heart Church. This goal must be met by May 31, 2002 or you will be charged at the higher non-Catholic rate and your child's report card will not be released until paid. 5. Except in an emergency, if you need to make special arrangements for after school pickup/rides for your child, please call the office before 2:15 p.m. It is difficult to get to each child to inform them of changes. If messages are left on the recording machine at school, they may be missed. 6. If your child arrives at school in the morning during or after the 8:15 a.m. tardy bell, please escort them to the school office and sign them in. The child will need to obtain a tardy slip/classroom pass at that time. 7. Please let your child know EACH month when they are to receive milk. A few children are assuming that since they received milk one month, they will continue to get milk on the following months. The children take a carton of milk each day, even during the month they have not paid for, which leaves our milk order short for the students who have paid. 8. Please keep track of hot lunch days you have ordered for your child. We do not have extra lunches to give out. Further, a child cannot d#ing $2.50 to school and buy hot lunch on any given day. We receive lunches for only those children who have previously ordered and paid. |

COMPUTER CORNER Mr. Grosch As we start the new year, our 7th and 8th grade students are deeply into learning Microsoft PowerPoint. Some parents have asked if they can purchase it. Actually, if you have Microsoft Office, it comes included with the package of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It is a great little tool that allows you to make fairly professional looking presentations. Microsoft Office is available at any software store and is available for both Wintel and Mac machines. The 6th grade class is starting database management and this will progress into letter mail-merge functions for letters they compose. We're busy typing names, addresses, etc. into the appropriate fields and creating new records. The 4th and 5th grade classes are still working with word processing. Skills include learning how to manually adjust tabs, making headers and footers, making columns, the different text justifications and their uses. The lower grades are concentrating on making multimedia stories that they will eventually show to the class, print out and make little books to send home. Second and first grade will also be working with Math Blaster, a math drill and practice program. The kindergarten class is involved with the living book series of CD-ROM programs. We are now engaged in interactive poems by Jack Prelutsky, a famed children's poet. As always, we will keep up our keyboarding skills on a regular basis and work with our spelling and grammar programs. Children also save all of their work, along with all their scores from keyboarding, spelling and grammar in their own folders. Until next time, have a happy new year and happy computing! |

PARKING ETIQUETTE II Van Thaxton, PTG Vice President For those who missed the article regarding parking in last month's Heartbeat, the rules are being posted again herein. Remember that the green spaces in front of school are for 15-minute parking or less. City parking enforcement will be called whenever cars are illegally parked. Parking Rules 1. Never park or wait in either of the two reserved parking spaces in front of the school unless your name is on the sign or you were given express permission. 2. Consider using the alley behind the school to drop off and pick up students. 3. Never park in the alley. 4. Do not cause your child to dart through traffic to get to and from the car. 5. Never leave your car double-parked in front of the school. 6. Do not park or wait in red curb areas. 7. Help relieve traffic by leaving as soon as your child is safely in or out of the car. 8. Do not pull onto Saratoga Avenue from Cable and come to a stop in the red zone. 9. Never park in neighboring residential parking spaces. 10. If you need to park the car, always park in a legal parking space.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR Linda Small The Annual Lions Club Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at the Masonic Temple on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. CLASS PROFILE&emdash;MRS. COLVIN'S THIRD GRADE CLASS This month we asked the 3rd graders the though provoking and often awe-inspiring question, "If you could ask God one question, what would it be?" Their answers were themselves thought provoking but most of all dear. Here's what they had to say: There were lots of questions about Heaven in general Raquel, Ryan, Catherine, Sean, Carmen, Cheyenne, Marina and Kimberli all wanted to know "What is it like in heaven?" Others wanted to know something more specific about Heaven "What do You do in Heaven?" Bianca "Who is living with You?" Zachary "What does heaven look like?" Robert Elizabeth and John wanted to know "What do You look like?" There were questions about creation "How did You make all the people?" Michael "How did You make everything?" James "Who created You?" Emilia "How were You made?" Megan There were questions about pets "Do cats and dogs go to Heaven with people?" Morgan "Are there any dogs in Heaven?" Matthew And heavier questions weighed on some minds "Will my dog die soon?" Travis "Why do people have to die?" Sierra "Can You cure cancer?" Thomas There were thought provoking questions "What would it be like if people and animals were never made?" Adina "Why did You send Your only son to us?" Derek "Why don't You visit earth?" Melissa There were short questions "What is my future?" Carly And there were compound questions "What does heaven look like? What do you look like? Do people change in heaven? What does my great grandma look like? Can you let me die in peace?" Jessica "Why is it that You only make some people sick with cancer? How do You decide who gets sick and who doesn't?" Campbell There were special requests "Please help all of the soldiers." Steven "May I have a beautiful life, please?" Gilbert And then, there is the practical question "God, can you help me throw my next baseball game?" Stephen Thank you, Mrs. Colvin and the 3rd grade class, for such inspiring questions and comments. |

THANK YOU Bob Hamm The staff would like to thank all of the families of the school who so generously contributed to the Christmas Money Tree sponsored by the PTG. Your generous monetary gifts to us are greatly appreciated by all of us. Thank you for being very special parts of our Sacred Heart Academy family. Also, thank you to the PTG Board for the delicious cookies! Thank You, Too I hope that by now you have noticed the beautiful new wall and fencing around the play equipment. This was made possible by a generous donation from a Sacred Heart family and funds raised by the PTG. In addition, Randy Deitz, father of Trevor and Curtis Deitz was the craftsman behind the beautiful work. Randy finished this project for us in record time, taking no profit on the job. Thank you, Randy, for our beautiful addition to the school.

8TH GRADE PROFILES This month features six outstanding eighth graders including a future baseball player, airline pilot, surgeon, teacher, athlete and architect. Jennifer H. First up is a local girl, born at Sharp Hospital in San Diego. Jennifer Ashley H. is the second child and only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Mrs. Howard is the aid in 3rd grade). She has one older brother named Jason. This past Christmas, the Howard family spent a relaxing and enjoyable time at the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido. Jennifer Howard has been a student at Sacred Heart Academy since kindergarten. Next year, she plans to attend Mater Dei High School in Los Angeles. After high school, Jennifer plans to attend college and study to be a doctor or an architect. What she says she will miss most about SHA are her friends and Mr. Hamm. Jennifer likes history and soccer, popped corn, Reese's candy and Pepsi. Her favorite movie is Happy Gilmore and her favorite book is The Giver. Her favorite band is Sum 41 and she says she also likes Josh Hartnett (this name has come up before) and Alex Band. The ideal day for Jennifer would be going to the movies with her friends and then shopping afterwards. She also likes to listen to music, ride her bike and play soccer. When asked whom she most admired, this is what she had to say, "I admire my Nana most because she always knows the right answers." The best advice she was ever given? It was "Don't doubt yourself." Good advice. Thanks, Jennifer, and good luck next year. Ju Young C. Next up is a relative new comer to our school, Ju Young C. Ju Young was born in Seoul, South Korea and is the younger brother of Se Young, who also graduated from SHA and is now a freshman at Saint Augustine High School. Ju Young plans to join his brother at "Saints" next year. As far as college and beyond, Ju Young said this, "I will go to any college that will give me a scholarship for playing football and do any job that relates to sports." What Ju Young will remember most about SHA is his first day of school, "Back then I couldn't understand English so I didn't have to worry about homework." (Ed note: He has beautiful fluency now!) Ju Young likes math and football and he frequently craves pizza, Hershey's bars and Sprite. His favorite movies are Black Knight and The Score and his favorite book is The Jungle. Ju Young's favorite saying is, "It ain't over till it's over" by Yogi Berra. The ideal day for Ju Young would be the day when (not if) he becomes an NFL player and wins the Super Bowl. For fun he likes to play any kind of sport with his brother. In addition, he likes to play the piano. Over the Christmas break, Ju Young and his brother entertained cousins visiting from San Francisco. The best advice Ju Young has ever been given was from his father, who told him, "What really matters is the process of doing something, not the result of what you have done." When asked whom his most admired, he said, "I most admire NFL, NBA and MLB players because they achieved something that is really hard to achieve." I suspect we will be hearing about Ju Young doing great things in the not too distant future! Maria R. Our next 8th grader is a young lady by the name of Maria Teresa R. Maria was born in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico and is the younger sister of brother Jose. This past Christmas, Maria and her family traveled to Mexico to visit her grandmother. Maria has been a student at SHA for two years. Next year, she plans to attend the University of San Diego High School. Following a full complement of academics, this go-getter hopes to land a career in teaching or law. What she will miss most about SHA are her friends and the uniforms (did she say uniforms?). Maria likes to hang out with friends, talk on the phone and go shopping. Her favorite subject is history and favorite sport is soccer. She likes Coke and pizza and the occasional Snickers bar. Her favorite movie is Pearl Harbor and her favorite book is She Said Yes. The best advice she has ever been given was to "try your hardest and never give up." When asked whom she most admired, she said, "I most admire my parents because they work very hard and are always there for me." I am sure your parents are proud of you too. Good luck, Maria!
Laura H. This next 8th grade profile brings us to a native San Diegan named Laura Anne H.. Laura has been at SHA since her kindergarten year. Her younger brother Stephen (8) and sister Mary Beth (10) are also students at SHA. What she will miss most about SHA is the small school community we have at the Academy. Laura and her family went to Disneyland over the Christmas break. Laura's long range plans include attending the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, college and then medical school to pursue a career as a physician, or more specifically, a cardiovascular surgeon. Laura likes to hang out with neighborhood friends and describes the ideal day as taking a cruise in the Caribbean. Her favorite subject is PE and favorite sports are volleyball and basketball. She likes In 'N Out Burgers and Snickers bars. Her favorite movie is Happy Gilmore and favorite book is The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. She also said that she likes cake icing. "Always look for the good in other people" was the best advice she has ever been given. When asked whom she most admired, she said "My dad because he is very neat and organized. He also is really good at solving tough problems." Congratulations, Laura, and best wishes for all your endeavors! This may be a good time for a 7th inning stretch. It is also a good time to inform the 8th grade students and their parents that if they have not yet been contacted to complete a questionnaire for the 8th grade profiles, they will. We have a certain number of students slotted for each issue. Eventually, we will get to all of the 8th grade students before the year is out. Still, if you have any questions, please call the Editor. William Peter Emmanuel
N., III Willie Newpauer, born in Whittier, California, is the only child of William and Nidia N.. Willie has been at SHA for eight years and plans to attend Point Loma High School next year. What he will miss most about SHA are all of his friends who do not go to Point Loma with him. After school, Willie hopes to become an airline pilot. The ideal day for Willie would be spending a hot sunny day at the beach with friends. For fun, he likes to go to the beach, the movies, and hang out at friends' houses. He says he also likes to sleep. Willie's favorite subject is computers and favorite sport is football. He likes his mother's bean soup and soda. His favorite movie is Not Another Teen Movie and his favorite book is Holes. He also likes the TV show "The Simpsons" and video game Simpsons Road Rage. He also likes to play with his Xbox, which occupied much of his time during the Christmas break. Willie said he most admires his grandfather on his mother's side, "because he had strength in raising a family of six with no money." The best advice he has ever been given? "Respect others and yourself." Congratulations, Willie, on 8 great years at SHA. Good luck!
Manny C. Wrapping up this month's edition of 8th grade profiles is a young man named Manny C., the older of two C. children, both of whom attend SHA. Manny has been at SHA for 7 years now and plans to attend Point Loma High School next year. A truer baseball enthusiast you will never meet, Manny hopes to get drafted into the big leagues, Major League baseball before college. If not, he will pursue an academic career and play baseball at SDSU and then become a professional baseball player. What he will miss most about SHA is the good educational experience and friends he has made at SHA. His favorite field trip ever was to Knott's Berry Farm in the 6th grade. His best volunteer job ever? Doing Trevor Hoffman's laundry for a week! Ask Manny about the rest of that story! Manny likes to play (guess what?) baseball. He also likes to play video games, watch TV, hang out with friends and take vacations with his family. His favorite subject is science and his favorite sport is (can you guess) baseball. He likes donuts and milk and Hershey's candy bars. His favorite movie is The Matrix and his favorite book is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Another favorite is baseball player Trevor Hoffman. When asked whom he most admired, you might be surprised at his answer, "I admire my mom the most because she is extremely smart and a very hard worker. I hope to be as smart as her one day." We look for great things from you one day too, Manny. Good luck! |
