FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S
DESK... This month I would like to share with you statements from the National Catholic Education Association. A Sacred Trust: The Safety of Our Children "Recent reports of a growing number of both confirmed and alleged cases of pedophilia and sexual abuse in this country are a cause of grave concern and profound sorrow for Catholic educators. As Catholic educators, we believe that every child is a gift from God from the moment of conception. We believe that the children enrolled in our schools must be treated with dignity, respect, and care. We believe that parents are the first and primary educators of their children. When parents send them to us to learn, we accept them as a sacred shared trust. We promise to ensure the safety of their children whom we regard as our children as well. Our schools have been built on a strong foundation that includes a safe and supportive environment, strong academic standards and a faith-based curriculum. We work to instill Christian values and strong moral standards. At this difficult time, it is important to note that our foundation has not been shaken. Catholic education is built on the shoulders of thousands of men and women who went before us and devoted their lives and talents to teaching. The 165,000 Catholic educators who serve in over 8,000 Catholic elementary and secondary schools bring it to life. As educators we extend our deepest sympathy to the victims who have suffered a loss of their childhood and their innocence. This is a gift that can never be returned to them. As Catholic educators we have both legal and moral responsibilities to ensure the safety of our children, and we honor those responsibilities. Beyond this, we are committed to examining every aspect of our work to make sure that we always respond with integrity and wisdom not only to the requirements of the law but also the call of the Gospel. It is the safety and well-being of our children that matter the most to all Catholic educators. It is a sacred trust that we will continue to uphold and defend." Medications If your child has medications in the school office, please pick them up on or before the last day of school. We are not permitted to send medications home with the students. Any medications left at the school after June 14 will be discarded.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER Stacy Turner It's hard to believe that this school year is almost over. I want to thank everyone who has given so much of his or her time and talents to SHA. With your help, we were able to build a beautiful new wall around our playground area and repair our playground lights. We planted a garden and have been watching it grow. When the country was reeling from disaster, we were able to show our support and patriotism by hanging a banner of support at the Pentagon. We funded two scholarships for SHA graduates to attend Catholic high schools and we met the PTG budget (no small task). Just as important, we had a lot of fun in the meantime. All of this was possible because of the dedication and hard work of our school families. From our Family Fun Nights to our Big Event, we proved once again that what is important is pulling together as a community family to make things possible. Thank you to all of the board members, directors and committee chairs whom gave of their time unselfishly. And beyond that, thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped with the day-to-day duties such as hot lunch, classroom helpers, field trips, etc. What would Sacred Heart be without you? The best measure of all our hard work will be in the faces of our children. They are the beneficiaries of all our hard work and it shows in the smiles of each child. Thanks again for a great year. I hope you will have a great summer with your family. God bless.

Library Lines Ms. Zapata, School Library Teacher To My Sacred Heart Family Thank you parents and students for the many kind notes of condolence that were given to my family when my father passed away last month. They were a comfort to me especially. I'm so thankful to have such a wonderful family at Sacred Heart. End of the Year Dates May 24 Last day to check out books May 31 All books must be returned to library Last day to bring in aluminum cans; please save over the summer! June 3 Birthday book club party at 2pm June 6 Last day for Homework lab Used Book Sale A used book sale is still going on in the library through this week. Books and magazines are on sale for ten cents to one dollar. Been Surfing Lately? Check Out This Site Site: www.inetlibrary.com Login: sha Password: inet We again have a subscription to Inet Library from now through next school year. You might want to check out this educational site for teachers and students. This site can be useful for school and/or home. Birthday Book Club As of today 23 children have donated a new hardback book to the library in honor of their birthdays. These children will be invited to the BBC party on June 3rd. You may still participate by donating a new hardback book. Please choose a book from our BBC box in the library or get a list of needed books from Ms. Zapata. Books are priced from $10 to $20. If students donate a book after June 3rd, it will be announced in June and they will get to come to the first semester party next year. All books donated after May 16th will be listed in the first Heartbeat of the next school year. Thank you to all the parents and students who donated this year. SHA's "Can"-Do Attitude Two people who worked "behind the scenes" for the library this year were Mr. Amicone and Mrs. Hinkes. They shared the job of collecting the aluminum cans brought to school. Thank you to both of them and thank you to all the parents and students who have saved cans this year. The following students were the "top" contributors this semester and will get a special treat: 8th&endash;Ju Young C., Stephanie C.; 5th&endash;Nick Y., Tom P.; 4th&endash;Timmy D., Alice H.; 3rd&endash;Travis C., Megan D-B.; 1st&endash;Breezy H., Stephanie Y., and K&endash;Daniel P.. Thank you also to Mr. Sherill, who was a regular recycler. I Think I "Can" Please save your aluminum cans for the library over the summer. We will have a big can contest the first week back at school. We saved 6000 cans this year. Can we do this again over the summer? I think we "can"! Over this next summer, use this phrase as your recycling mantra, "I think I 'can'" to help you remember to recycle all of your aluminum cans. The participants in the winning class and the top recyclers in each room will get Slurpee(r)s in September (when it's always really hot!) We no longer collect plastic bottles during the school year as they take up so much room but if you would like to save them over the summer please continue to do so. Last summer we made $157 for the library and I would like to make that or more this summer.

Banquet![]() ![]() Stacy Turner The annual All Sports Banquet was held on Wednesday May 15, 2002, at the Masonic Hall in Ocean Beach and it was a success due to the dedicated people who worked on it. Thank you, Janice Teixeira, Lori Kretz and Linda Small for putting together a wonderful sports banquet. It is always wonderful to see how happy our kids get when their accomplishments are recognized. A very special thank you to all of the coaches who put in so many hours with the teams. And further, a VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to the Sheppard family, who for the past few years have put in so many hours as Athletic Directors for our school. We appreciate all your hard work and wonderful organization. As you know, next year the Athletic Director job will be taken over by Coach Brady Kramer (alias, SHA P.E. teacher), who did a wonderful job as emcee at the Athletic Banquet on Wednesday night. We look forward to working with Coach Brady in the coming years to continue our wonderful sports programs. Sports Uniforms If you have not done so already, please turn in your sports uniforms. Place the uniforms in a bag labeled with your child's name and leave it in the school office. Thank you and have a great summer!
A WORD FROM THE ROOM PARENT COORDINATOR Carla Pekin As the end of the year draws near, I would like to thank all of the Sacred Heart Academy room parents. This volunteer position entails many hours dedicated to assisting the teacher both inside and outside of the classroom. By organizing and assisting in many activities, the year flows smoothly. Some of these activities include calling for field trip drivers, classroom assistance, Big Event project selection and execution, party planning and many hours of phone time. Our children benefit greatly due to their generosity. If you pass one of your children's room parents, give that person a big Thank You! Our room parents deserve it.
Mrs. Valenti This year all of the students from the middle school participated in the Union-Tribune and Old Globe contest, "You be the Critic." Each student needed to see a play and write a critique. From January to March they went over the elements of a review and read some articles that were in the newspaper. One from each class was chosen to enter into the contest. Esther D. from the 6th grade, Morgan P. from the 7th grade and Erin C. from the 8th grade were sent from SHA. We were very excited to learn that all THREE of our students made it into the top ten! Each student won two season tickets to the Old Globe. Next was an interview to determine the top winner. The interviews were held on May 15 and 16. The winner was informed on May 20th and I am pleased to announce that our very own Erin was the top winner! She won $1,000! This is the second top winner from Sacred Heart Academy. Last year, Adam B. won a trip to Germany. The faculty and staff are extremely proud of the fantastic effort of these students. We wish them further success in their academic careers. Congratulations!
PARENT SERVICE HOURS Van Thaxton If you have not done so already, please turn in a record of your parent service hours (a minimum of 20 hours for two parent households, 10 hours for single parent households). Parent service hours are an important part of our community here at SHA. If services hours are not turned in by June 10, it will be presumed that they were not met and the family will be charged accordingly. By the way, I have received a number of service hour reports without name identification. If you have received a notice after turning in your hours, please call me to see if yours is one of the forms without a name. Thanks.
Van Thaxton The SHA Heartbeat is seeking a creative editor's assistant to help with the production of the Heartbeat. Duties include helping to plan the monthly newsletter, collecting articles written by parents, students and staff and writing articles as appropriate. No experience necessary. Will train. Excellent benefits (your kids will think you are famous when they see your name in print). Interested call Van Thaxton at 222-5604. LOST! Around April 15, Kristen K. (1st grade) lost her hooded shark attack sweatshirt. It has her name on the inside label. Please check your closets to see if you inadvertently have an article of clothing bearing another child's name. If you have any information on the missing sweatshirt, please call Mrs. Kaesbauer (858) 274-7850 |

"FUTURE'S SO BRIGHT, I GOTTA WEAR SHADES!"&emdash;7th Grade Answers to a Thought-Provoking Question Van Thaxton Recently we asked the 7th grade class to respond to the question, "Where do you see yourself in 20 years?" Some knew exactly what they would be doing, others were less precise, and still others thought they would be so aged they weren't sure what they would be doing. But one thing is for sure, all students were very optimistic about what the future holds for them and plan to run, not walk into the future. I see myself in twenty years ...running a ranch with a husband, two daughters and a dog. Amanda ...married with kids, graduated from Stanford and I don't know, I can't tell the future. Shannon ...working as a nurse after college. Lauren ...becoming a lawyer and having a Mercedes Benz. Noor ...following my dreams and doing what I love. It does not matter what I do for a job or where I live, what matters is that I love what I do and I love who I am. That's what life is all about. Jena ...working as a programmer with a big company with a good salary. Brandon ...as someone who was rich and famous but then I got too old. Then I will live in some huge mansion with a built-in Starbucks and have some really hot husband and I will be a journalist/film maker who always wears black. ...as a successful businessman with a huge home out in the country. Devon ...as living off the money I make from being in my band. We will be famous someday. But then I might wake up... Danny ...playing in the NBA, making 20 million a year. Kellan ...married and working at a computer store. Matt ...working as an engineer. Kendall ...working somewhere that I don't know. Brett ...in the pilot seat of a Navy search and rescue helicopter. Morgan ...as a pro baseball player or a doctor. Casey ...working on a professional football field as a sports doctor. Derek ...Twenty years from now is unknown to me but I know that God will be watching over me. Maggie ...working as a builder. Billy ...living the life of a pro-surfer. Jordan ...having a good life, enough money and a great job. Logan ...33 and working at Starbucks. I will also have a house on Hawaii. Cody ...working in or owning my dad's restaurant. Chris ...being single, living in the hills of Hollywood and working as an interior decorator to the stars. Kathryn ...rich and married to Chris Trousdale. Chelcie ...out of college with my master's degree, working as a child psychologist/social worker, married with two kids and another on the way. Sakura ...I will be old and I will be selling computers or something. John I hope you all reach your dreams and that you have much happiness in your futures. A THOUGHT Jay A. Davis Evaluate with an open mind, but use a Great Reference TRUTH
