FROM THE PRINCIPALâS DESK...

Every day we discuss with your children what being a responsible student means. Too often we forget that in order to have responsible children, we must first have responsible parents.

As parents, I would like for you to sit down and go through the list below to determine if you are a responsible parent. Discuss your findings with each other and decide how you can become a more responsible parent.

BEING A RESPONSIBLE PARENT MEANS...

LIBRARY LINES

by Mary Zapata, Librarian

FANTASTIC NEWS!

We are in the third year of raising money for our Library Technology fund which will enable us to bring our library into the computer age. I thought we might have approximately two more years to reach our goal but we have some very dedicated "Friends of the Library" who are helping to make this goal come true this year. The Ocean Beach Lions Club has offered to donate the proceeds from their Annual Spaghetti Dinner to the library! You=ll be hearing more about this fun event and library progress in the near future.

HOW MANY BOOKS?

How many books would you guess were in our library? Go ahead, take a guess right now! Recently, we had a contest in our library for the students to guess how many they thought the library had in its collection. Students Aguestimated@ from 88 to 10 hundred thousand! However, many students made very close estimates. These students were the best estimators:

  • 1st place:   Kyle Deitz,          grade 5 (4,276)
  • 2nd place:  Jesse Doiron,      grade 5 (4,100)
  • 3rd place:  Mark Finklestein, grade 3 (4,000)
How close did you come to the correct answer of 4,200 books in the library?

HELP!  A side note to FANTASTIC NEWS!
Because the general plan for the upgrade of the library will be accomplished sooner than the expected time, I need help finishing the preparation for the computerization and automation that will be taking place with the new system. Before the books can be bar-coded and the catalog computerized, I need to have an accurate and up to date index card for each book in the library. This job involves matching books with cards and filing. If you could help with this labor intensive task by giving an hour or two of your time, please let me know soon as I need to complete this job in January. I have some great volunteers in Charlene Ables, Kathy Garrett, and Gina Dowd, but we need more help. Thank you.
ALUMINUM CAN DRIVE
By now we know which room brought in the most cans in the Fall Aluminum Can/2 Liter Bottle Library Drive.  Third and fourth were in the lead, but any class could have won. Be sure to keep saving your aluminum cans and 2 liter bottles. Christmas vacation is a great time to save. Iâm giving a little ãafter Christmasä treat to all students who bring in cans the first week back in January. The can drive is especially important this year as the money is going toward our Library Technology fund to help with the computerization of the library. Thank you to all the families who participate and remember, ãcrush the can.ä   ?
BOOK FAIR Î98 ö Î99
Another event we have coming up is the Annual Book Fair. It will start during Open House Sunday January 24, 1999 (not Super Bowl Sunday this year!). I will need volunteers to set up the Friday before from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and the next week for classroom visits. If you might have time to work for an hour or two please fill out and return to the Library. Thank you.

SALLY FOSTER GIFT WRAP

We have had another good year with Sally Foster. We made a profit of $3,675.96. Thank you to all those families who purchased Sally Foster. See you next year. I would also like to thank four 6th Grade students who helped me deliver the Sally Foster to the classroom: Monica Malowney, April Cromer, Jeanne Tontz, and Victoria Ognibene. I really appreciate your help. Thanks, Kathy Howard, Sally Foster Chairperson. _

PRESIDENTâS CORNER

Dear Parents,

Last week=s Tuesday Folder announced the final number for the Oktoberfest - $15,160.00. The PTG greatly appreciates all the time and effort each committee gave. We took a risk when the spring festival was changed to an AOktoberfest@. I have to applaud Steve and Janice Teixeira for making it all happen. The feedback has been very positive and in this case, it appears that we made the right decision. Our kick-off dinner, chaired by Lori Kretz and Ann Coito, was also a success especially having to contend with the World Series! It is not an easy task to find families to take on such huge responsibilities! SHA could not survive without such dedicated families. I hope everyone will find time to thank the Teixeira=s and all the committees for doing such a tremendous job!

I also want to thank all the families who attended the dinner and Oktoberfest! We surpassed our budgeted goal because of your participation! Thank you for taking the time.

We now have a final number for Sally Foster Wrap. This year came in a bit lower than anticipated - $3,676.00. Thank you to those of you who contributed.

This year I have a goal to bring the Parish and the school together once again. There are two ways in which you can become involved with our Parish - the Interfaith Shelter Program and the Community Life Program.

I=ve been asked to find a few people to help serve breakfast or dinner at the Pt. Loma Community Presbyterian Church in January. This is for an Interfaith Shelter Program. Sacred Heart=s dates of service are January 12, 13 & 14. It is a wonderful experience. A few other friends and myself helped Sr. Ann last year. It only takes an hour and a half of your time. Contact me with any questions or if you are interested in helping.

A Community Life Program will begin soon. Ed Nolan, Director of Catechetical Ministry, can be contacted at 223-4594 for more information. Many of us are concerned with the changes in our children and in our lives. Ed has been well educated about our children of the 90âs. This is a group to aid our parishioners and school families with the problems of today=s society.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please contact me anytime at 224-1437. Thank you and have a great day!

Sincerely,

Kelly Andrade, PTG President _

SHA CHRISTMAS

This year we are breaking with tradition and will not have a school-wide Christmas program. This decision was reached after much prayer and deliberation on the part of the school staff, PTG board, and Fr. Ron. One of the reasons why we were faced with making this decision is because of a lack of adequate facilities for a program.

This year our students will exemplify the true meaning and spirit of Christmas, which is GIVING. On December 17th each class - grades one through eight will be going to retirement centers in San Diego to present a program of carols for those who do not always have the opportunity to fully celebrate Christmas. The kindergarten class will present a program to the senior citizens of our parish at their monthly luncheon on December 4th at noon in the Parish Hall.

The performances on December 17th will be at 6:30 p.m. at the retirement centers. After their sharing of carols with the senior citizens, we are asking all Sacred Heart Academy families to come to the school to enjoy the carols from each grade, including the kindergarten class, and to have refreshments provided by the PTG. By doing this we are sharing our children with others, and at the same time are able to enjoy their talents ourselves.

I hope that all of you will make very special efforts to make sure that your child is part of this Christmas sharing experience. Mark your calendars now for this special Christmas experience for all of us at Sacred Heart Academy. _

OB CHRISTMAS PARADE

The SHA Student Council is in charge of the SHA float for the OB Christmas Parade.  They need your help in obtaining materials needed for the float.  They need the following items:

2 large boxes (refrigerator size)
6 smaller boxes (TV size)

Miss Koch and Mrs. Valenti are the Student Council sponsors.  If you are able to donate any of these items, please contact them as soon as possible at school.

EGGS, EGGS AND EVEN MORE EGGS????

Just when you thought it was safe to throw out that eggshell...don't do it!! Instead, start saving those eggs for the AEnd of the Year Blast@. So remember, crack, rinse, and save those eggs. Bring them to school and they'll get stuffed. Couldn't do it without you! Nancy Wilks 225-9851 _

A BIG EGG THANK YOU

And speaking of eggs... a big egg thank you to Nancy Wilks and Tina Atchley for stuffing all those egss for the Oktoberfest! The tremendous success of the egg booth is due to the hard work of both of them, as well as all of you who saved those eggs. Keep up the good work! _

PTG BY-LAWS AMENDMENT

Traditionally, Academy staff and faculty members have been expected to support our school by attending PTG-sponsored fundraising activities on their own time and at their own expense. While the Board of Directors believes their participation is necessary to the unity of the PTG, we also feel their attendance should not be at their own expense.

The Board of Directors has proposed the following amendment to the By-laws with the intent of showing our appreciation to faculty and staff for the tremendous level of dedication and support shown our school and our children. Ballots will be distributed to all PTG members for a vote during the week of December 7. _

PROPOSED AMENDMENT

Proposed change to By-laws Article XI, Section 4, regarding fundraising activities. The current section reads as follows:

Section 4. All fund raising efforts of the organization require the consent of the Pastor.

PROPOSED CHANGE:

Section 4. All fund raising efforts of the organization require the consent of the Pastor. Complimentary admission tickets to all major fund raisers shall be provided by the PTG to Sacred Heart Academy staff, faculty members and one guest each.

SHARK BYTES

It's seven o'clock, the library is closed and you need some information to finish your paper. Here is a great resource for middle school students...It's geared to grades 6 and up. You can click on subjects and get information on a host of different subjects. It also provides links for greater in depth study.

http://www.schoolwork.org/

Here are a couple nifty web sites you might find helpful...

Ah, life should be this simple. Actually, if it were, the need for a site such as AHow Stuff Works@ would be eliminated. HSW dissects some of the items found in our everyday lives, such as the refrigerator, television, and automobile engine, and explains how they work in very simple terms. Those of you who glaze over at even the mention of a rocket engine will be amazed at how something so complex can be broken down so methodically. The site categorizes its topics into categories such as AEngines and Motors@, AAround the House@, AThings You See In Public@, and of course, AComputers@.

For all you forgetful adults...Let the Internet remind you about your next big appointment! At Candor.com=s Internet Reminder Service at

http://www.candor.com/reminder/

You simply write yourself a reminder message, which Candor then sends back to you at 12:30 a.m., Greenwich Meridian Time (that's 6:30 a.m., EST) on the day of your choice.

Not only can you have the service remind you of your anniversary EVERY YEAR, but you can also consult a handy list of appropriate anniversary gifts - and come off as a true, traditional romantic! _

RESPECTING OTHERS PROPERTY

Sacred Heart Academy has been placed on probation for not being respectful of other schools property.  Specifically, this included Uni High School and Holy Trinity.  Children have been found playing on the football equipment, regardless of the fact that they are also unattended, vandalizing school property, and jumping over fences into private property to retrieve balls.  Probation means that during a regular season game the school responsible will have to forfeit the game.  During playoffs the school will automatically be removed from the playoffs.

We are very fortunate to be able to use these facilities.  Letâs not ruin it and instead enjoy the facility and treat it as if it were our school.

Thank you.  SHA Athletic Directors

SHARK SPORTS

COACHES NEEDED:

We are in the process of organizing our soccer team for Pee Wee (K-4) girls and boys, soccer for girls grades 5-8, and basketball for boys grades 5-8. What we need are coaches for any of these sports. If you are interested, or know of anyone that you think may be interested, please give one of us a call.

TRACK MEET:

Last year only one family participated in our Parochial League track meet from Sacred Heart Academy. Our school would like to participate but needs people who are interested in making this happen. This would involve organizing the groups of students who would like to participate and practicing with them. The track meet is usually held towards the end of May. If you are interested in organizing the track meet this year, give us a call. It=s a lot of fun and would be very much appreciated.

JUST A REMINDER:

If your child is not able to make practice or a game, please give the coaches a quick call and let them know. Our coaches are giving so much of their time. But in order for them to plan and be prepared for both practices and games, they do need to know who will be attending. There are specific guidelines as to how much a student will be able to play in a game if practices are missed. The information is located in the Extra-Curricular Sports Handbook. These are available in Mrs. Henkels office.

Itâs the Childrenâs turn to set the Thanksgiving Table!

By Nancy Wilks

The Silverware:
Remember the rule: Work from the outside in! Use the knife, fork or spoon that is farthest from your plate for each course. (The host will remove the used utensils after each course.)

The Napkin:
The meal begins when the host unfolds his or her napkin. This is the guestâs signal to do the same. Typically, you want to put your napkin, (completely unfolded if it is a small luncheon napkin or folded in half lengthwise for a dinner napkin), on your lap soon after sitting down to the table (but follow your hostâs lead). The napkin remains on your lap throughout the entire meal and should be used to gently blot your mouth. (The more formal the event, the more vestigial the presence of the napkin÷unlike in the distant past when the tablecloth was the napkin÷because the purpose of nearly every aspect of table manners is to preserve cleanliness and proper appearance....) If you need to leave the table during the meal, place your napkin on your chair. At the end of the meal, when you leave the table, place your napkin loosely next to your plate÷not crumpled nor folded nor on the chair.

NEW IMMUNIZATION LAWS

Dear Parents:

If you have a child currently in the 5th or 6th grade, you have already received notification of the new 7th grade immunization law. We are writing to you via the Heartbeat to make sure that no one has missed this important information.

On October 12, 1997, Governor Wilson signed AB381. Here is a summary of the bill: as of July 1, 1999, students must meet new immunization requirements prior to 7th grade entry, including a 3-dose series of Hepatitis B vaccines. This series takes a minimum of 4 months to complete. Schools will be responsible for excluding those who have not completed the series (all 3 doses).

What does this mean for Sacred Heart Academy? First, the statute covers all schools, public and private. Exemptions are allowed only for medical reasons or personal beliefs. Second, a review of 6th grade records on 10/15/98 reveals that of the 36 students registered, only 5 have been immunized against Hepatitis B. Therefore, the parents of the remaining 31 6th graders will need to plan three visits to the doctor or clinic before September 1999.

Those students currently enrolled in the 6th grade at SHA will receive a total of six notifications of the new law by March of 1999. Since this will give everyone ample time to complete the series (4-6 months needed), no student will be allowed to enter 7th grade in September 1999 unless proof of all 3 shots are on file in the school office.

Please do not send proof of immunization until all 3 shots have been completed. Hepatitis B vaccine is available daily at all six Public Health Centers in San Diego. Please call us if you have any questions. Mary Anne Capistrano 226-1014 and Valerie Martin 483-7926_
