FROM THE PRINCIPALāS DESK...
I know it is
hard to believe, but during this month we enter the season of Lent. Each
year the Church sets aside forty days of special time we call Lent. During
Lent we try often to think of how Jesus carried a heavy cross and died
for us. Jesus lived more than thirty years on earth without suffering special
pains and sorrows, but just before He died, He suffered much because He
wanted to bring new life to all men and women - and He knew there was no
way to do that without pain.
Each day of
Lent is something like a stepping stone along a path, a path that leads
to Easter. During this season we want to get to know Jesus a little better
and to understand His suffering on Good Friday and celebrate His rising
on Easter Sunday.
During Lent we can step aside and look inside! Inside where? Inside each of us! Lent can be a time to be quiet and think about God and Godās goodness...a time to stop, look, and listen...an opportunity to plan how we can use our minds and our hearts to know God, love God, and be friends with God.
Let us all use this Lenten season to examine our lives, and to grow spiritually every day, to be one with Christ and to be one with each person we meet.
The Church suggests that we set aside some regular time each day for prayer, especially during the Lenten season. I offer you the following prayer for Lent.
Lord Jesus Christ, by Your passion,
death and resurrection
You have set us free from sin and death.
May Your grace renew our hearts this Lent
and help us turn from sin in our own lives.
May we learn to appreciate more deeply
the sacrifice You made for us.
Accept our prayer, fasting, and acts of charity
as we seek to draw closer to
You during this holy season.
Strengthen the faith of Your people so that
we may be a sign of Your love to all the world.
Amen.
BEING A RESPONSIBLE PARENT
As parents we are always expecting our children to be responsible, to be thoughtful, and to be respectful. In order for us to expect this from our children, we must first set the example to them of these important character traits.
If your child is involved in an activity after school, whether it be being a part of a school sports team, enrolled in an after school class, or in extended day care; it is your responsibility as a parent to make sure that you are on time to pick up your child from the activity. It is very presumptuous of you to expect the instructor, the coach, or the extended care director to stay until you finally come pick up your child.
I strongly urge you to always be punctual, responsible, and respectful. You can do this by always picking up your child on time.

NOTES
FROM THE OFFICE
PARENTS:
DO YOU KNOW?
Oftentimes when school is dismissed at noon, many of the students in the upper grades leave the campus and go places in Ocean Beach for lunch. After lunch, many of them return to school and go into Extended Day Care.
You should be aware that if your student leaves the campus after noon
dismissal, the school is not responsible for your child. Make sure that
you are aware of where your child is going, with whom, and for what period
of time.

LIBRARY LINES by Mary Zapata, Librarian
Library Technology Fund
We are in the 3rd year of or library technology fund to update and computerize the library catalog, barcode the books, and have a scanning checkout system. This will enable the librarian to spend more time helping students and teachers and less time with an outdated time-consuming paper system. Also, the students will have a system in use at most other libraries. Proceeds from the aluminum can drive, the book fair and the Lions Club Spaghetti Dinner go towards this fund. We will be able to get at least a part of the system this year.
Spaghetti Dinner
Come to the Lions Club Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, February 6 from 4-6 PM. This is an annual event and we are so lucky that they have generously offered the proceeds to the library. Take the whole family to the dinner and eat with other school families. It will help our library and save you a night of cooking and washing dishes. See the flyers sent home for further information.
New iMac
The library has a new iMac internet computer. Thank you to Mr. Grosch, our computer teacher, who saw a great deal on a 2nd iMac for the school and to our principal who agreed to buy it and a color printer for the library. It is fast, fun, and easy to use! ?

SHARK SPORTS REPORT

Final
schedules are out for girls JV and Varsity soccer. Look for the calendar
in the glass case this week for times and locations of games. I will put
a box downstairs in the closet next to the teachers lounge for "used" equipment/athletic
wear. There is always a need for used soccer shoes and shin guards. If
you have something that you no longer need and would like to donate it,
place it in the box.
Thanks to all of you who support the sports at Sacred Heart. ?

SHARK
BYTES by Mr. Grosch
This the time of the year when the computer lab really gets a workout. Itās Science Fair time and the middle school students are spending a great deal of time in the lab. The lab is often open in the evenings as the project deadline approaches. This year we have some wonderful projects, and I anticipate that we will again do well in the Greater San Diego Science Fair. The students have put a great deal of time and effort into their projects and they all should be commended.
This time of year the Kindergarten and first grade are working on math programs. The lower grades have been working on such word processing skills as cut, copy, paste, spell check, font selection and enhancement, and text wrapping imported clip art.
Of course, middle school students are working with several different charts and graphs and other functions using computers. A new search feature now used with the iMacs in the lab and the library is called Sherlock. It is able to search many different sites and use several different search engines to assist with student research.
As always, if any of you have any old Macintosh computers and are planning to upgrade, how about thinking of giving Sacred Heart Academy a tax deductible donation. We can also use any old memory chips that you may have lying around as well.
Coming soon to our web site will be a picture of the students of the Month and the Science Fair Hall of Fame.
Until next time, happy computing.?
