FROM THE PASTORâS DESK ...

Dear Academy Parents,

The staff at the Parish has been attending a number of workshops on family life. Leaders from the Center for Ministry Development in Nauggatuck, Connecticut have presented materials from their "Ministry One" program that have challenged us to look at faith formation and the principles of learning in a Faith Community. I thought that some of the material would interest you.

Childhood Religiosity

  • If Church leaders want to shape Catholics' views of faith and morals, they need to pay special attention to influences that take place very early in people's lives. The factor with the most impact on Catholics' religious beliefs and practices is childhood religiosity. By childhood religiosity we mean the extent to which youngsters are subjectively and behaviorally involved in the Church. Subjective involvement refers to the salience they attach to religion (i.e., religion's importance in their lives). Behavioral involvement points to their participation in devotional activities such as prayer and public rituals such as attendance at Mass.
  • Childhood religiosity affects closeness to God. The more people learn to be religious as children, the more likely they are to report experiences of the holy later in life. In other words, the way young people are raised has long-term effects on their ability to experience God in their adult years.
  • Childhood religiosity also fosters commitment to the Church. Catholics who learn to be religious when they are young find it relatively easy to claim their Catholic identity. They also come to appreciate the benefits of being Catholic.
  • The more children participate in religious activities and develop a sense that religion is an important part of their lives, the more they are likely to have close personal relationships with God later in life and the more they are likely to learn about major developments such as Vatican 11 - both of which foster adherence to Church teaching. Childhood religiosity also promotes Catholic identity and investment in the Church, which also make significant contributions to faith and morals. Early childhood religiosity does not guarantee faithfulness later on, but it sure improves the odds.
  • The two most important influences are having parents who talked about religion and having religious educators and catechists who are effective in ministry. Young people learn how to be religious when their parents talk with them about religion and when they receive guidance from instructors who know how to nurture religiosity. It seems that remaining active in one's childhood church is more attractive t( those with strong family connections.

Although the above comments are the result of analysis of Catholic situations, I am sure they apply in any Christian context. We at Sacred Heart are committed to the development of the total person and I am sure that our preparatory work with Ministry One will benefit the entire parish and families of Sacred Heart Academy.

    Sincerely in the Lord,

    Fr. Ron Hebert

FROM THE PTG PRESIDENTS DESK ·

    Dear Sacred Heart Parents,

Get ready... it's going to get busy! Thus far, financially, we are on schedule. The PTG is very pleased with all the support from each family involved with our fundraisers. I think these letters are a wonderful time to thank especially those who put forth the extra effort to raise money for our academy. The spaghetti dinner, chaired by Linda Small, wentexceptionally well. Thank you to all the families who participated; -we could not have done it without you! SHA will be recipients of approximately, $5,000.00 from the Peninsula Lion's Club. I hope many "Thank Youâs" will go out to both Linda Small and the Peninsula Lion's Club.

The PTG General Meeting, on January 28, 1999, went very well. Sr. Caire Patrice Fitzgerald was very interesting. She reiterated the importance of keeping our priorities straight and how this could benefit our children. Sr. Claire has a very busy schedule and we were fortunate to have her speak at our meeting.

Please look for the upcoming dates pertaining to meetings for "The Big Event" -- Auction. Mary Jane Warren and Heidi MacBeth are still looking for volunteers to help in various areas. Most of the chaired positions are filled. Please contact either of them for more information.

Eric and Ann Stiverson are working hard on the "End of the Year Blast." We still need confetti eggs for this dinner. You may send the eggs to school to the attention of Nancy Wilks. Thank you for all the eggs thus far.

Two weeks ago Sue Wise and I sent a letter to all families asking for your help. Marilyn Stroud, mother of Brett and Erik, has recently come home from the hospital. We would like to provide dinner for the Stroud family for the remainder of the year. It looks like February is filled. Please contact Sue Wise for the remaining months g 224-2254. Thank you for all your time and support.

Lastly, if you are able to sell script at any of the masses this month, please contact Patti Dimasi.

    Sincerely,

    Kelly Andrade

    PTG President

    REAL TEACHERS ·

    • Drive older cars owned by credit unions.
    • Canât walk past a crowd of kids without straightening up the line.
    • Never sit down without first checking the seat of the chair.
    • Have disjointed necks from writing on boards without turning around.
    • Have been timed gulping down lunch in 2 minutes 18 seconds.
    • Can predict exactly which parents show up for PTG meetings.
    • Can "sense" gum.
    • Have never heard an original excuse.

    • Understand that June, July, and August are now only six weeks long.
    • Hear the heartbeats of crisis and always have time to listen.
Know they teach students, not subjects.

LIBRARY LINES by Mary Zapata, Librarian

    Great Success

Thank you to all who participated in a great book fair! Many books were put into the hands of children and a cash profit of $769 went into the Library Technology Fund. Also, many books were purchased for the classrooms as the wish lists were fulfilled. Thank you to the following children and families for donating books to the library: David Sheppard, Erin Capistrano, the Davidson family, Trevor Deitz, Monique Texeira, the Moskitis Family, the Sousa family, Brynmoor Hughes. A very special thank you to the Veltman family who donated $200 for the purchase of middle school books. I am asking students for their suggestions and replacing some copies of books that have worn out.

The book fair would have been impossible to do without the help of many volunteers who gave so generously of their time and energy. A special thank you and "job well done" to the book fair team of '99 Sandy Alvarez, Barbara Austin, Sue Berrill, Claire Brockett, Emma Charbonneau, Pam Collins, Ann Coito, Michelle Deitz, Lorraine Duffy, Gina Dowd, Laura Hoban, Lori Kretz, Jean Penney, Lisa Rehberger, Linda Roper, Tracy Sheppard, Eileen Sullivan, Lydia Tillinghast, and Joyce Van Thaxton. Special thanks to Sue Bourdon and Lorna Thiel who helped set up and take down the fair, and to Eva Mard who helped after school.

    Aluminum Cans

The aluminum can man, Doug Tillinghast, continues to do a wonderful job taking the aluminum cans to the recycler. The last checks he turned in totaled $181, so it is well worth the effort. Please keep saving cans during Lent. We will have an after-Easter treat for those who turn in the most cans. The classes in the lead so far are grade 5 with 1,000, grade 4 with 798, and grade 7 with 623. Thank you to all who continue to recycle.

    Library Book Reports

Students in the middle school do oral or written book reports every month. The next book reports are due the week of March 22. Sixth grade is reading an award winner or nominee, the seventh grade is reading a religious or inspirational book, and the eighth grade is reading historical fiction. Students give the usual bookreport information, as well as give author information and their own opinion of the book.

    Library Essay Winners

The San Diego County public libraries recently had an essay contest for students throughout San Diego county. Sacred Heart Academy had three winners in this contest: Nathaniel Smith and Jessie Chilcote in eighth grade, and Krista Yancey in fourth grade. Congratulations to these outstanding students, and a big thank you to their teachers Miss Koch and Mrs. Valenti.

    Spaghetti Dinner

The spaghetti dinner was another great success that helped the library. I can't give enough thanks to all the people involved. A million thanks to The Lions Club members, the entertainers, the Sacred Heart parents and all the people who came to eat. In the next Heartbeat I will write about the library equipment we were able to get as a result of this wonderful effort.

    Used Book-Video Sale

We are having a used book sale. It will include children, family, and exercise videos and foreign language tapes. The sale will be the week of March 8th. if you have any paperback books in good condition you would like to donate to the used book sale, please send in a bag or box to the library. Most books will be 10 cents and 25 cents and videos $1.00. Some a bit higher.

    Storytime

The primary grades are being read the California Young Reader Medal nominees so they can vote for their favorite in March.

    Birthday Book Club News

A fun time was had by all the students who came to the birthday book club party held February 8th. It was given for all those students who donated a new hardback book to the library the first semester. Another party will be given at the end of the year for those students who donate second semester. A separate party will be given for those middle school students who donated during the school year 98-99. Please choose a book from our birthday book club box in the library, or get a list of suggestions from Ms. Zapata, our school librarian. Remember we need new hardback books for birthday book club donations.
