FROM THE PRINCIPALāS DESK....

May is the most beautiful month, or certainly one of the most beautiful months of the year. This probably is why someone many years ago dedicated May to our Blessed Mother, why classrooms all over the country have May altars, why the month ends with the crowning of her statue. Also, in the middle of this beautiful month we celebrate Motherās Day. We Catholics regard this day as a double feast: a remembrance of our earthly mothers and a remembrance of our heavenly Mother.

During this month our students will concentrate on learning more about the Blessed Mother. We will have Marian devotions each morning, and will have our May Crowning on Thursday, May 27th, 2:00 PM, at Sacred Heart Church.

As a family, you might spend some time in prayer together each day. A prayer that you might use with your family is the Prayer to Mary Immaculate, Patroness of the United States:

Blessed Mother Mary, we turn to you in prayer for all the people in these United States. We again place ourselves in your care, in the gentle hands that cradled the Child Jesus. We ask you to make us more alive in your faith, more generous in your love,
more trusting in your hope.

Teach us to imitate Jesus, as you did,
and always to follow Him with your courage.

Mother Mary, help us to become a people who hunger for justice and who burn with compassion for those who suffer in our midst. Make us a people who cherish and defend the dignity of every human person. Free us from all selfishness and self-interest, that we truly might be the builders of the Kingdom of God.

Immaculate Mary, help us to stand among the family of nations as a people of compassion, generosity, and peace. Make us a people of vision and courage who will gift this world with new life, new hope, and the unity for which your Son died.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us
to turn with confidence to you today.

Amen

GREATER SAN DIEGO SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR

On Thursday, April 15th, while most people were scrambling to complete their tax forms and get them in the mail to the IRS, a small band of scientists from Sacred Heart Academy were gathering at Golden Hall. Tonight was the night for the "Academy Awards" for scientists!!

Students from throughout San Diego County competed in this Science Fair in both Senior and Junior Divisions. Our students competed in the Junior Division in which there were 690 entries. The top winners at this level move on to the State of California Science Fair, so much is at stake!

Mrs. Marcarelli, the ultimate "mad scientist", who also serves as science teacher for these students, was in her place, awaiting the first announcing of Sacred Heart Academy as a winner. True to form, it didnāt take long for the accumulation of awards for Sacred Heart Academy to begin.

The students listed below all received awards. We are very proud of all of them, and very grateful for the dedication of their teacher, Mrs. Mac. I do want to single out one student - David Davila - who, for the second year in a row - a feat no one can remember happening at this fair - was awarded a Sweepstakes Award in the Junior Division. Once again, David will be competing on the state level. Joining David in the state competition from Sacred Heart Academy will be Andy Baumann, Nathaniel Smith, Adam Torpey, Jessie Chilcote, and Anna Brun.

THANK YOU!
FROM MARILYN STROUD

Dear Mr. Hamm, SHA Staff, PTG, & SHA Families,

This is a note of thanks to all of you who have helped turn what started out as a nightmare, into a blessing. The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming and has lifted me up every day.

Thank you Mr. Hamm, Father Ron, Father Ralph, and everyone else for taking the time to see me in the hospital. Those visits meant so much to me. Thank you to all who sent flowers - my room was like a flower shop! Thank you to my special friends who brought the parties to me when I couldnāt get out. Youāve been incredible. Thank you to the parents at SHA for the wonderful dinners youāve taken the time to prepare for Brett, Erik, and myself. Itās been a tremendous help and very much appreciated. Iāve met so many new families through the kindness and generosity youāve shown me and Iāll never forget it! Thanks to all of your support, I am getting stronger every day. Sacred Heart is a wonderful family, and I feel blessed to be a part of it.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Stroud

NEW LINK ON SHA WEBSITE

Having problems deciding which movies your child should see, which videos your child should view, or which CDās your child should be listening to?

Your problems are solved! We have added a new link on the Sacred Heart Academy website to a site that rates movies, music, videos, and dvdās in great detail. They are rated according to alcohol/drugs, blood/gore, disrespect, frightening, weapons, music appropriateness, profanity, sex/nudity, smoking, and violence. It is also explained in great detail why the movie, etc., is rated as it is. There is also a very good "Word to Parents" section.

I strongly encourage parents to take advantage of this service.

Just go to SHA website: www.s-h-a.org and then you can link to the ratings site.

While you are at our website, you might check out other parts of the site. It is an outstanding website, thanks in great part to our webmaster, Mr. Paul Grimes, who puts many hours into upgrading and updating our site. Because of his dedication and hard work, the SHA site is one of the most visited school websites in the United States.

A GIANT "THANK YOU" to Paul Grimes for providing our school with such an outstanding website. Also, "THANK YOU" to Rich Grosch who provides Paul with all the information and pictures for the website.

Isnāt it great to be a part of Sacred Heart Academy!!

STAND UP FOR KIDS

During Lent students were given the opportunity to have free dress every Friday if they made a $1.00 donation to Stand Up For Kids.

Because so many students opted for free dress, our school was able to donate $1,000.00 for Stand Up For Kids.

Thank you to all the students who contributed to this very worthwhile cause.

We received the following letter from Stand Up for Kids:

YEARBOOK PICTURES

The deadline is rapidly approaching. If you havenāt gone through your pictures yet, please take a few minutes to do so. We need pictures from ALL grades. We know youāve got them - we just need you to turn loose with them! The pictures can be returned - just put your name and grade on the back and they will find their way home! Help make the yearbook one to remember.

THE BIG EVENT

The theme for this yearās Big Event auction is ĪSPEAKEASY". The fun will begin with hors d"oeuvres, martinis, a full "casino" by the Knights of Columbus, prizes, and a silent auction. Then on to dinner and the Draw Down and Live Auction. Music will also be provided throughout the evening. A portion of the evening will be outdoor, so please dress appropriately. Youāll want to be able to take advantage of the gorgeous view of the water and downtown.

The auction could still use more donations, in particular a trip or vacation package. If you have a connection, or you can provide something yourself, please let us know.

Mark your calendars for May 8th, and remember to send your reservations in early. No admittance to the Naval Base without a reservation.
