FROM THE PRINCIPALāS DESK....
Here we are again, facing the end of another school year. I know that you may hear myself and teachers talking about counting down the days left in the year, ready for the school year to end. The reality is that we probably put up a good front to hide our true feelings about the ending of a school year. If you really look closely at us, you might see a tinge of sadness. Teachers have spent the last ten months giving their all to every student in their class. They have nurtured each child as if that child were their own, ensuring that every student is a success. When you put that much into a group of students, in many ways, it is very difficult to send them on. In sending them on, though, each teacher knows that the students are being sent to another dedicated professional who will nurture them and prepare them for their next step up. And so the process continues, the Catholic educational process, refining the messages . . . because . . . "Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see."

On behalf of the staff of Sacred Heart Academy, I want to thank every SHA parent for sharing your child with us, for letting us help you prepare your child for the new millennium.

We ask Godās continued blessings on every one of you. We offer this Summer Blessing for every child:

May our loving God watch over you
and keep alive in your heart
all that you have learned this year.

Keep your mind on God.
Remember to pray often
and to celebrate your faith
at home with your family,
and at Mass with your faith family.

Keep your faith in God.
Let all the joys of summer
remind you of Godās goodness.
Never forget that God
is always with you, no matter what.

May the God of all creation,
Who comes to us in Jesus,
and lives among us in the Holy Spirit,
keep you safe, happy, and holy
this summer and always.
Amen.

NEW FOURTH GRADE TEACHER

Mr. Jeff Saavedra will be our new fourth grade teacher for school year 1999-2000.

Jeff was selected after an interview process including interviews by myself and by a committee of teachers. I am confident that Mr. Saavedra will be a very positive addition to our school.

Jeff has been a teacher in the Diocese of San Diego since 1990, teaching third and fourth grade. Before becoming a part of our Diocesan school system, he taught P.E. and health science in New Mexico.

Jeff has a B.S. from the University of New Mexico, a teaching credential, and graduate school hours in Administration.

We welcome Jeff Saavedra to our Sacred Heart Academy family.

Bob Hamm

SHArk Bytes

from the Computer Lab

This is the most fun time of year for me. The essentials of word processing, data base management, graphing, and spreadsheets have been thoroughly covered and now we really get to create!

The upper grades (4-8) are currently finishing up their Hyperstudio Projects. For those of you that are not familiar with Hyperstudio, it is a program that allows the operator to create a true multimedia presentation. Children are able to import different sounds, pictures, and text from the Internet. Many scan pictures from books or magazines. Mary Zapata is extremely helpful with the studentās research, which they then apply to their projects. They are required to complete two mandated projects, then they are allowed to create their own Core Knowledge project. This is coordinated with their classroom curriculum and teachers. The program allows the student to create special effects, animation, basic programming, and original sounds as well.

The lower grades are working on their own slide show presentation and storyboards. This is a precursor to learning the more challenging Hyperstudio.

As always, we still emphasize keyboarding skills. Two recent high achievers are third grader, Brendon Andrade, who completed all 22 lessons in our typing program, and fifth grader Allyson Cunanan, who is currently keyboarding at 50 words per minute at 98% accuracy.

Until next time, happy computing!

A Message From the President

Dear Sacred Heart Parents,

The year is quickly coming to an end and before I know it, my term will come to an end.  It has been a pleasure to serve you in this position, and with your help we attained all our goals.  In order that we may make next year a success, I hope all of you will join me in supporting our incoming President, Kathy Hailey. Thank you to all of the Executive Board, Directors, and Committee Chairs for your time and dedication.

Thus far, all of our fundraisers have been successful. We have had very dedicated chairpersons for each fundraiser this year.   I have great respect and appreciation for the Teixeiras/Oktoberfest, Mary Jane Warren and Heidi Mcbeth/The Big Event and the Stiversons/End of the Year Bash. I am also thankful for the Ways and Means Committee consisting of Linda Small and Susie Merrill. The combined total of the Spaghetti dinner, cookie dough, and Pennies from Heaven exceeds $14,000 !!!  Please express your appreciation to all that have offered their expertise and time. These fundraisers help keep your tuition down.

The Big Event was chilly but successful.  The scenery was beautiful and excitement was in the air. We hope the evening was enjoyed by all.   Thank you Mary Jane and Heidi for all your hard work and great ideas.

Lastly, Kathy Hailey still has a few committee slots to fill for the 1999-2000 school year.  One important slot is Boys Athletic Director.  Leigh Hark and Lauren Hoban have served as Athletic Directors for many years.  Both of them will be stepping down next year.   Each Director (Boys and Girls) has been divided into two positions.  Both positions of the Girls Athletics have been filled. We still need one more person for Boys Athletics.

Leigh and Laura have done spectacular work and have turned our athletic program into one of the most respected schools in the Diocese. If there is someone in the lower to mid grades interested in this position, please feel free to contact me @ 224-1437.

We hope to see everyone at The End of the Year Bash! We have a great band, the return of the margarita bar, confetti eggs, face-painting and baseball throw!  We will also recognize some very special people who have been extremely helpful this year.

Thank you and God bless!

Kelly Andrade, PTG President

THANK YOUāS

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it a fantastic year in the library. Gina Dowd has given every Friday and/or Monday afternoon as a library volunteer, helping to reshelf books and process new books. Olin Thompson, grandfather of Roy - 2nd, has come every week to reshelf books and be a fun "guest reader".

ALUMINUM CAN WOMAN

It doesnāt rhyme like "can man" but we are so glad that Barbara Finkelstein has volunteered to take on the job. This recycling activity adds much to library funding. Thank you Barbara. Doug Tillinghast will continue collecting until the end of the year so keep bringing in those crushed cans. Every child who brings in at least 25 cans will get a small treat.

SUMMER READING

Ocean Beach and every public library have a summer reading program that is free to students. This year the theme is Far Away and Long Ago. Children who read 10 books or 10 hours are awarded small prizes. They are also invited to a special program at the library.

GOVERNMENT FUNDING

One of the few things our school gets from the government is a program that allows us to order library books through our local public school system. This year I will be ordering reference books on countries to replace our out of date series. I also will order books on scientists and explorers.

MEDAL WINNERS

Here are the winners of the California Young Readerās Medal voted on by students at SHA and many other California schools.

Primary - Livingstone Mouse

Intermediate - The 13th Floor

Middle School - The Blood Red Sun.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

The catalog has been sent to the company and it should come back in six weeks. Iām so excited about learning how to use the new system this summer. The next big step will be to put bar codes on all the books! Iām thinking of having a bar coding "bee". Our custodianās wife, Julie Norenberg, a district librarian in the Santee school district, has offered to help me get started.

LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY FUND

Our Library Technology Fund will continue as I would like to get another client computer to use for the studentās catalog. Other ideas are to purchase more memory for our library Internet computer, another internet computer, a small photocopier available for studentās use, etc. etc.

  BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB

Books are still the heart of our library and will be for a very long time. They are relatively inexpensive, portable, require only brain power and each child may check them out free from the library. If your child has a June, July, or August birthday, they may still join the Birthday Book Club by donating a new hardback book to the library. Please get a list from the librarian or choose a book to buy from our Birthday Book Club box. (These are great buys I find on sale for up to 50% off). Mr. Hamm will announce your childās name in June and your child will get a special thank you in the mail. They will get to come to the birthday book club party the last week of school. Their book will be mentioned in the September Heartbeat and will be the first one read at the beginning of next year.

Thank you to all the children who have donated new books to the library during April and May.

THANK YOU

As the 1998-1999 school year comes to an end, along with it comes the final edition of the Heartbeat for the year. I would like to give a GIANT "THANK YOU" to Janet Sanford for all the help, support, creativity, devotion, and friendship she has so willingly and generously given over the years we have done the Heartbeat together. I am sure most of you donāt realize that without her the Heartbeat would not have been the same. I would also like to thank Mr. Hamm for always being the one person to meet the Heartbeat deadline! And for all of you who have contributed to the Heartbeat over the years in one way or another -

Thank You! Kay Chilcote
